Official Why is everyone bickering thread.

None of this explains how a program can lose to some of the worst programs and beat some of the best in the country. Nor does it explain how so many Hawks are in the NFL.

I'll work on that one... how much you give me for such an explanation? $$

Or some of us simply realize that it's just a freaking game and recognize that how we feel about our sports teams is not indicative of how we live our real lives. The ones that get so upset about a freaking game pretty much show themselves to be someone who has absolutely no life outside of their sports team(s) and live vicariously through their successes and failures. Back in the day, we used to call these guys LOSERS. Still do, as a matter of fact.

You realize it's possible to be upset about where the football program (or any program) is at and still have a real life, right? I'm certainly not happy with the state of things, and would expect to start seeing improvement very soon if I'm going to continue backing Ferentz. He's made it pretty tough to do the past 2-3 years.

But at the same time, I have a life outside of Iowa sports. And now that I no longer work at the DI, how they play has little impact on how I live any aspect of my life.

There are a lot of things worth getting upset about....wars, hunger, child trafficking, recessions....but to get upset about an amateur sports team played by young men trying to get an education and better themselves as students and men and coached by a man that by all appearances is the epitomy of character and everything else thats right and good with sports seems trivial and silly.

But thats just my opinion.

If you don't get at least a little upset when the team loses, or at least a little happy when they win, why do you bother rooting for them at all? THAT seems silly to me.

damn. so what dow we do now?

I do get a little upset if they lose....but I get upset FOR them, not AT them. I don't take it as some personal afront to me if they lose or think that they are doing something to ME by losing....and then, in turn, take my frustrations out on the players and coaches because they didn't win and make me happy. I know and understand just how much work the coaches and players put in, I feel for them when they don't come out on top. Conversely, I am happy if they win.....but I am happy FOR them.

In the end, watching and rooting for my favorite sports team(s) allows me a little escape for just a few hours each week and a chance to bond and enjoy sports with my boys. In the end, if they win, it's that much better, and if they lose, I feel bad for the team, but I still got a chance to watch and enjoy my favorite team and I got the opportunity to spend some quality time with those around me I care about.

Sports just needs to be put into a little more perspective.....life's too short to have your mood dictated by what a sports team does or doesn't accomplish.

TM, you seem to be pretty intelligent and I like your contributions and articles you share, however there is a point of when simple common sense comes into play. DP or Spider or any of the so called "apologists" never said they don't get upset at all when the team loses. What they're referring to is getting so upset that a person would feel the need to start an internet message boad argument/fight with anyone and everyone who isn't outraged by the teams lack of success since the '09 season. Or coming here on site (or any site for that matter) and going on and on and on with the same tired overplayed comments about KF and the program. It's all about the level of upset that you are, what does upset mean to me or you? Who knows, but it seems that jumping off the ledge and making comments that seem borderline suicidal is what happens to a small few here but they also seem to be the loudest and most frequent posters as well. Responding to everyone calling names and making little to no point at all. There are two kinds of internet tough guy know it alls, the ones who act like that in the real world and the ones who don't. Either way, they need to relax no matter how "upset" or mad they are nothing they do will change anything except change others opinions of them. I understand how the "interwebz" works, however people should act like adults.

Please keep in mind that I lost faith in KF after the '10 season, but I don't see the point freaking out and arguing with anyone and everyone who still has faith in him.

In the end we all love the hawks and want nothing but the best for program. We all just have the difference of opinion of what that is and how to reach it. I just wish people could be a little more respectful to each when discussing it.

All of the bickering and internet tough guys, if you ask me, is indicative of the whole "message board culture". It's pretty easy to talk a big game when everything is totally anonymous, and you are safe behind your keyboard and monitor.

I choose not to engage in that kind of internet tough guy crap because A) I just don't believe in being a pr!ck to people in the first place, and B) it's pretty cowardly when you don't have to look the other person in face when do it. It sure wouldn't make me feel like any more of a man.

Agreed. There are things in this world that really truly matter. Then there are sports. It gets frustrating when the Hawks lose and it's fun when they win, but at the end of the day, I know it's just a game and I am able to move on. Heck of a lot easier for me to do these days than it used to be. I realized that sports just are not worth getting that aggravated over.

I would like to see the fan base unite behind the team. It would help motivate recruits to join the team. After all who wants to play for a fanbase that is constantly critical of them? Also being positive will motivate the players to want to play better for fans that appreciate them.

Not that hard to explain actually. Unless you are Alabama, you don't win all your games and you lose some you are supposed to win and win some you are supposed to lose. Happens to all programs. The only ones that don't know this are close minded fans lacking perspective. Happens to all programs

This is how I feel as well. People can make fun of this aspect if they want, but I have a strong feeling recruits and players do visit these message boards to get a pulse on the fanbase. They probably laugh at half of the people who state their opinions as facts when in reality they have no clue what they're talking about. Maybe I'm crazy, but I would guess that they check to see if they are being talked about as well. That's why it's annoying to me when people make Hawk fans look ignorant, and impossible to please by posting ridiculous comments. It's one thing to discuss frustrations with the coaching decisions and philosophies, but you can do so in a respectful manner. Some people just take that to the extreme and in my opinion it can make our fanbase look pathetic at times.

I know all fanbases deal with this, and I know message boards aren't an authentic sample of the entire fanbase, but regardless of those facts it can still make us look like a bunch of spoiled brat kids at times. If a recruit or player does visit the board I'd hate for that to be the opinion they leave with.

So all programs lose to Minnesota, ISU, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, and Northwestern?

Most decent to good programs will lose to a school this poor once every 5 years or less. Iowa has two of these bad losses every year.

Id say the bigger problem is playing for a staff who doesnt trust their offense to win games. You motivate players by showing that you trust them to win games, not put a knee down and see if the other team will make a mistake.

Gee, Ooth.

1. NW is a good team now. Lots of teams lose to them.

2. You simply do not realize that Iowa is the toughest place to recruit in all of division 1-A football.

3. Do you really wanna get rid of ferentz, then take a chance on getting some new coach that most likely will take this program down to the bottom?
