Generaly speaking, I think it's bad karma to take pleasure in another's struggles. Alford is one guy I'll always make an exception for.
Noodles was his recruiter, his defensive guru, his fall guy, probably ran a good deal of the practice. Alford could concentrate on what he did best which began with the letter "D".He didn't have a clue at Iowa until Neal came on board. He used the Bobby Knight theory of playing through the other team;s rally. Alford would wait until a 10/12 point lead would vanish and then call a TO when we were behind by at least 4 points.....
Over and over, rinse and repeat, over and over.....
Noodles helped right the ship to a degree.....
Bob Knight, the paragon of virtue!!!!Kind of funny you say that...fraud. Ya think he did what he did in success innocently? Ask Bob Knight!
You typed in Alford. Did you mean McCaffery? He didn't have a clue at Iowa until Neal came on board. He used the Bobby Knight theory of playing through the other team;s rally. Alford would wait until a 10/12 point lead would vanish and then call a TO when we were behind by at least 4 points.....

Bobby's heart was always in the right place but his methodology wasn't. There are other ways to install discipline and respect without acting like a pompous tyrant. Some say the end always justified the means and he did win a lot of games and championships and graduate most of his players. But he also drove a chasm between players on his championship and final four teams to the point where some of them still don't speak to each other. Dan Dakich went on a radio rant last year over Knights lazy recruiting practices in which the name of Raef LaFrentz was invoked.Bob Knight, the paragon of virtue!!!!

I suppose it's not out of the question that all those favors and charity work that Knight did for others were really in fact controlling mechanisms. You owe me more favors than I owe you. You're under my umbrella forever. Pay up or else. That's possible.Knight was/is a classic abuser. His heart was always about Bob. He built a cult following. He had a gift/knack to get away with it. Guarantee you there is more to the story.
Fran is also abusive. He isnt good at building a following or winning like Knight. Many of the players digressing is a form of freeze mode.
Some of you will point out his players seem to like him. That is often the case in abusecand its hard to see.
Illinois has the same parallels. Thes style coachs are a diminishing breed.
Either would work just as well as the other.....You typed in Alford. Did you mean McCaffery?
