Official Oliver Martin "Eat Crow" Thread

Yeah, I was unsure why you were talking such a harsh stance on this whole thing. Obviously @GHawk and @Ree4 didn't even know that the B1G also gets to review the case. They heard the NCAA cleared him by family members so they said as much. You really could have handled this whole situation a whole lot better than you did.

I agree with that. I could have handled it better here.

In my defense, nobody differentiated between him being cleared by the NCAA and being completely cleared. That's what I was reporting on. My source told me he was not yet eligible. And that's what I was reporting.

But I have learned some lessons here. I will be much more tight-lipped when it comes sharing information. I will let you guys share rumors and speculation and stay out of it.

That's not me taking my ball and going home. I just think it will make things easier.

Tough deal too because in order to have sources you have to make sure they know if they don't want to be named that you won't name names or you won't release info indicating who the source was before they want you to, if ever. I get frustrated when they say on tv "anonymous sources tell XYZ News ................". But I do understand why they have to.

The B1G for certain could have denied it if Michigan raised a stink, which was a concern on the Iowa/Martin side.

This was not a done deal until this morning. And I'm not claiming victory. I'm reporting facts.

We would have all marched on Harbaugh's house.

Yeah, I think you and other journalist were in a difficult spot here. I mean you guys can't report ANYTHING til it is a done deal. I mean you can't come out and just say he has been approved before the B1G also approved it. I think journalist should be more concerned about being right than first now. I mean who care is someone else gets the information out first, I want to read from a journalist how it all went down when it is all confirmed and done with.

I think the Martin family and their lawyer were probably a little too confident after the NCAA ruling.

I will gladly eat crow in this case for doubting the credibility of the information. But at the same time, I think we can all agree that anyone sitting behind a keyboard (not a shot at either of those that contributed initially) can make that claim knowing that a decision would be coming shortly with no information available to them whatsoever. Throw in the fact that Rob, who's reputation and credibility are at stake, couldn't confirm anything and I think its very easy to see why most of us were skeptical. That said its great news for everyone so I'll continue to eat that crow with a shit eating grin on my face.

That's pretty harsh. Rob is a journalist who holds himself to a little higher standard than a GHawk or Ree4. On top of that, he is part of a website that I'm sure doesn't want to be in the business of having info posted on it's site that isn't correct....while at the same time, making sure he protects his sources and the info they are giving. I'm cool with how Rob handled this.

I'm sure in the hell glad I don't get access to "inside" information. If I did I don't think I'd ever post it on here. GHawk and Ree4 went through hell, I'll admit I had my doubts when GHawk first posted but I started believing it when Ree4 backed it up but then I seen Rob going off on it and then I didn't know what to think.

I hope you reconsider that. Most of the time your info is going to be more accurate. It's better for everyone on here if you post what you're hearing.

It made for good discussion, entertaining at times. Kirk would make a good double agent. He had to conduct that press conference yesterday and no one came away reporting that Martin was approved. Maybe he's in the CIA.

There was a "tell" from Kirk at one point. He sort of slipped about "on the field this Saturday"...

It would have been quite amusing if Kirk would have flat out said at the presser, “the NCAA has approved him, but Michigan and the big ten are dragging their feet now” ...would have made my year.

Ironically, another UM tranfser, Aubrey Solomon to Tennessee, was granted his waiver late yesterday/early today. Does that make us bluebloods?

I really think some of the stories pseudo-lambasting UM & Harbaugh have put the folks in Ann Arbor on the defensive. Not good optics to have ALL your transfer-exits get denied while having your transfer-entries approved.

Having a good lawyer fighting for you is the great equalizer in America. If you can afford elite level of representation you can take down anyone. Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan athletic department are no match for a true litigator. I guarantee without a lawyer this wouldn’t have happened.

Just look how one legal team can force Johnson and Johnson and their billions of dollars and high powered lawyers to pay $572 million in Oklahoma.

Eh, I look at it like this....Rob is a journalist. He can't just report shit and rumors without official confirmation...he has to be responsible (or at least he's supposed to be). Us losers are just fans, we aren't under the same restrictions.

Agreed.
