***Official Iowa Makes Dick Butkus Mad Game Thread***

Again, Illinois needed 6 yards (I was wrong when I said 4) to kick a field goal. Iowa needed to stop the 4th down play and then pick up 30 yards in 12 seconds to get a field goal. that is a huge advantage for Illinois and would have been criminal to not take those odds.

It was a little bit of clock management that didn't matter because he ran out of downs and it was proper game management that didn't work out because there is almost never a coaching decision that guarantees a 100% success rate. What you're doing here is the same thing as ripping on a poker player who calls an all in with an over pair on the turn because the guy sucked out on a 2 outer on the river.
How is it proper game management when Iowa was gifted three points?

Look, when I get behind the wheel of my vehicle i suppose there is a chance i could die. When I use my neighbors pool the is a chsnce i could drown. When I go running there is a chance I could suffer cardiac arrest. There are always risks if you want to go that way.

Lovie got put in a tough spot because he was tantalizingly close to field goal range. It's like a manager pulling a pitcher in the fourth inning down four runs. If he brings in the mop up guy, he could be conceeding a game that his bats woke up late in. If he brings in the stopper, he may be burning him for the next night when there may be a lead to protect. He chose to go for it in a spot where, even if he had succeeded, he would have had no time outs and been staring at a long field goal. Had he punted, Iowa would have needed a return or a miracle play. In this case punting wouldn't have completely eliminated Iowa's scoring chance, but would have rendered it next to nil. Lovie weighed the options, took two time outs, and decided that at the end of the day he would rather live with the abusive spouse than live alone. Poor game management because it was an unnecessary risk that backfired.

It was proper game management because he chose the decision that had way better probability to benefit his team than to benefit the opponents team. You can't decide what the better decision was after you see if it worked or not. And he didn't gift Iowa 3 points. Iowa earned them by making 2 huge plays in a row.

And how can you call that an unnecessary risk. Is it proper game management to never try to score because it's too risky. You seem to forget that while punting gave Iowa almost a 0% chance to score, it also gave them an almost 0% chance to score. They're on the road, huge underdogs, and trailing in the game. You're arguing that choosing a path that gives them a way better chance at success than it does their opponent was an unnecessary risk?

If a team was tied at the end of a game, got the ball all the way down to the 5 with 2 seconds left, and kicked a field goal that got blocked and returned for a touchdown, would you say it was poor game management because taking a knee gave the other team no chance to score? That it was an unnecessary risk to try to win the game when they had a huge advantage because they gifted the opponent 6 points? It's rare that a coach has choices that favor them over an opponent by such a wide margin. Not taking those opportunities out of fear of something bad happens is something Kirk did way too often for way too long and is a terrible coaching decision. Sometimes making the right decision doesn't have a goot outcome. That's what happened there.

Good lord you two. Lol. Love the tenacity.

I just don't get the logic that guaranteeing no one scores is somehow more important than having a huge advantage over your opponent. Putting your team in a position to have a huge advantage is something a coach is always striving to do. I assume Northhawk loved Kirk's decision to play for ot against OSU in '09. Gave up a big advantage to guarantee no one gets points.

I think were pretty close to being on the same side. I'm just glad we won the game and I will gladly take the three points. Im just having some fun while watching some late night football.

You should have seen the humdinger we got involved in last winter, and for good measure @lightning1 was involved. I think I finally gave up when PC started bringing families into it.

No way dude! We had decent field position, timeouts, and momentum. But we also had a true freshman making his debut in the big shoe.

I think Kirk himself has come to regret that decision, tried to live it down, and showed last year against Nebraska that he would do the right thing if faced with the same situation again. Of course he was also at home with an experienced starting QB.

But it was the same scenario. Go for points when you have a big advantage, or make sure no one gets points. One team needs 6 yards in one play. The other needs a defensive stop for one play then gain 30 yards in 12 seconds. HUGE advantage.

I don't remember that one. What was it about?

I think it was about AAU ball or maybe a Tyler Cook discussion but it was late at night and I was tired. I remember @thedukeofearl making some reference to a nursery rhyme or bedtime scene from a children's book when I mentioned I was going to bed.

Iowa played at Minnesota on a Sunday night and I had travelled to Stoughton for AAU tryouts and a snowstorm was coming and we drove the last sixty miles home in it and I was catching up on the forum for the Minnesota aftermath and I was tired. The exchange may have been somewhere around that Minnesota game.

You guys wouldn’t know what to do if I changed avatars. Dogs and cats would get along, pigs would fly, and @ClintonIAfan would stop bitching about refs.
