Offensive success....

I'm curious as to what level of success the offense is going to need to have for BF to have been a good hire?

I will clarify that this isn't what I think the end goals should be, just what it will take to be optimistic about the future

I'm thinking some combination of:
- 27+ points per game
- 325+ yards per game avg
- average 150+ yards rushing
- average 175+ yards passing ******
- 70th ranked offense or better
- 60th ranked run offense or better
- 80th ranked passing offense or better*****
- 60th or better ranked 1st/3rd down offense.
- me not being able to call what the play will be 60+% of the time

Again, none of these stats are all that impressive, they are pretty avg, to below average, but most are huge improvements over the last 5 years.

I could be off on some of these, curious as to what some of you fine Hawkeye fans think.

If we can maintain a level of defense we have come to expect, even a pedestrian offense would take us to a higher level.

After GD he is going to look good regardless. Stats won't matter it will be can he take the next step and become HC. There is a risk from the Ferentz side of this.

Brian will be the perfect barometer of how much Kirk is involved in the offense. If the offense puts up 75 to 100 more yards per game we will know Davis was the problem.

Personally I think it's just going to come down to Ws and Ls.

Maybe, but given the schedule the next couple years, unless we have an elite defense...or insane amounts of luck...an offense(especially a passing offense) like last year won't result in more than 6-7 wins, even if the run game and defense is solid.

It'll all come down to the passing offense. If it can get to a level where defenses have to at least respect it, everything improves on offense....

Defense should be about on par next year, if we get good CB play from the young guys, maybe even really good. Combine that with an overall avg offense, we will be playing for a B1G West title come Nov...

^^^ KOK amnesia syndrome.

Yeah, KF is a common denominator, and the Offense under KF has never been very electric, by KF design and philosophy. It's always been on KF to find an OC that can work successfully within his overall philosophy (see O'Brian, Chryst references below)...something he has been unsuccessful at...and terrible with the Davis hire, which I've contended is likely his worst action (along with the losses to isu and lesser teams)

But the offense was better under KOK than Davis, was it not? It really wasn't any more exciting and many times just as predictable, but it was more successful overall, and some years with likely less talent at RB and WR. The reason? I believe it was an offense that worked within the KF philosophy, something Davis's schemes really never did.

Now, if we can get that mesh, with a little more flare, formation, and less predictability...a la PSU under O'Brian or Wisc under Chryst....

It doesn't need to be all that different in philosophy to be wildly more successful.

So the offense was fine till GD arrived? Yep, amnesia.

Nope, it wasn't great, or even good, prior to Davis, it was average. But it was better than under Davis. And no, Avg isn't good enough most years, to get Iowa where we all want.

That said, Average gets us to Indy last year. Hell, shite bag awful got us to 8 wins. Average offense, (along with very good defense, some well timed luck, CJ's healthy legs, and a favorable schedule), got us 12-0 and within a couple plays of B1G title and CFP shot.

I want better than average, average isnt good enough against great teams, higher end bowl teams, and B1G Championship opponents. We're gonna need better than avg in upcoming years that the schedule appears to get tougher.

But let's get to at least back to average before asking for something we've only seen from Iowa maybe 5-6 times in the last 40+ years.

Hopefully this OC change gets us that.

KOK was just as bad as Davis and had the benefit of better qb's too. I suspect the offense will not change much. I just hope Brian will fix the predictability.

BFerentz needs to not only be and look so predictable but also find some good counter plays that work. At least KOK had some good counter plays some years based on available personnel.

Just since we are keeping track we currently sit at 50 in recruiting which is 5 slots behind Iowa STATE!!!!! Kirk you and your staff SUCK at recruiting wake up and do something. Oh wait you don't have to you have a lifetime contract.

You ain't seen nothin' yet...wait til PJ gets in full swing up North.

I'm curious to see if the passing game reverts to standard route-trees instead of the sight-read (whatever it was called) that called for both the receivers and qb to read coverage the same way and be on the same page. Especially in a year like this past season, where there's a senior QB and a young/inexperienced receiving corps (especially once Vandeberg went down), that seems much harder to do and the passing game suffered as a result.

This. I don't think the philosophy that KF brings is a bad philosophy at all. The main issues as stated have been predictability and the really bad play calling. We don't make that many mistakes in terms of penalties, we generally take care of the ball. We generally have above average special teams as well as defense. For our style of play and our "Philosophy" we play so the games are close. That means on offense our margin of error is slim and in most cases we have only a few chances a game to make really important play calls.

A perfect example of this is the Outback bowl and the fourth and goal call. The play call was predictable and showed no guts or creativity. I would be interested to know how long a team really prepares during the week for our formations and play calling. Another example is the 2010 game against Wisky. The guts that Bielema showed to call the fake punt is exactly what is needed at times to not only play to win games but also get the other teams to think about something else. We can get really creative with the same philosophy in terms of play calling, tempo, and personnel I just hope Brian brings some fire and isn't afraid to take some risks.

There are all kinds of precedents in the KF era that show this won't happen. Not on purpose and not for long if one learns the lesson of KF and Davis.

So there's nothing wrong with the philosophy outside of bad play-calling and offensive predictability.

Congrats on the GED you earned at the age of 37.
