Offensive Game Planning

This was mentioned in another thread. Why did we continue to leave Boone Myers 1 on 1 with Calhoun all night? It was obvious from the beginning that this was not a good match up, but it didn't seem like they never made any adjustments to help him. No backs chipping. No TE's helping. One time Calhoun lined up on Croston and HKK cracked him and floored him allowing the pass to get thrown cleanly.

Yep. My main question regarding game planning and my biggest concern going into the game.

I know it is a really feel good season but aren't these the questions the Iowa sportswriters should be asking? Calhoun is their most dominant player. Future NFL star possibly. A few national pundits were directly pointing to that specific matchup going into the game and why it would be difficult for Iowa to win that one. And their DEFENSE was the difference. Calhoun was the MVP, not Cook in IMO. What did we have, one first down in the 2nd half? And by penalty?

But we continued to leave Myers on an island. He clearly was struggling. It clearly affected our passing game. If we could have slowed him down even a couple of times that might have meant a couple more first downs. Maybe not points, but it may have rested our defense a little more. Time of possession disparity in the 3rd and 4th quarters was just astonishing.

I can only speculate why we didn't adjust:

1. BF and GD weren't on the same page or

2. and most likely, KF has the philosophy you just need to man up and get the job done. ??

Sometimes you are just outmanned physically. Technique can only go so far. This was the case Saturday night. No slight to Myers.

You have to realize, Kilmer, this 'man up no matter the consequences' is an oldkirk coaching trait. It is not coaching. It is going with what was taught in March. IMO, the reason

I thought maybe they'd try to exploit his aggressiveness, chip block him with the back and send him out in the blank space created by his pass rush. Easier said than done.

To this ^^^ point I thought they'd have seen to try and do this as well. Get him up field, throw the flare screen to his side, release the tackle to his side to the next level or out into space on a secondary player. If you can't block him you have to make him think a little bit, hopefully slowing down his rush. We didn't do that enough. In fact, in a bit of bad luck, the one time it looked like we threw the play I describe above, we "caught" MSU in a defensive look that had Calhoun pass dropping and he made the play on Mitchell for little to no gain.

How about double-teaming him with a TE early in the game? Slow him down. Frustrate him. Run right at him with a full back lead. Soften him up a bit.

I know. I know. Two ways to approach it. Don't overly consume or focus yourself on their player. Just go about your business and run your base offense. I get it.

Still he really did take it to Myers. We should have done more. He looked like freakin Bruce Smith out there.

He is just that good. Hats off to him, not many guys in college who can single-handedly disrupt one of the best run-blocking Olines in the country.

Certainly...was just speaking to using his aggressiveness against him. Multiple ways to skin that cat and we waited a little too long (or didn't use enough) to implement them.

I saw mostly Mitchell in the 4th quarter. That was the offenses' strategy, IMO. Getting him in space with the pass/run. Their primary halfback target, running or passing, had his helmet taken away from him. And Wadley was also still hobbled, IMO.

So we do how some of you have mentioned and we still have 3 outstanding LB's that need attention, those guys were quick and to the ball....Boone was over-matched, but I don't have the answer....do you give up something just to keep one guy in check? MSU was damn tough on "D", no doubt about that....

Yeah, if you want CJ to survey the field for more than 1 Mississippi, help the tackles.

Funny. But sadly true.

A couple more blindsided hits and CJ may have been floating down the Mississippi. In a box.

My hunch. And just a hunch. It's KF's NFL mentality coming through. NFL tackles don't get much help do they? You gotta beat your man straight up. Big Boy football.

KF never really changed much in terms of schemes/philosophy this year. He threw out a few fake FG's early in the year (first two games), and that was it. We did try a trick play against Northern Texas that backfired....and then we were pretty much done with those plays.

We did appear to run a RB pass/option in this game, but I was hoping for a little more aggressive play calling from the beginning, but never hit it until 4th Quarter.

And it's completely on KF and his staff for not making adjustments quick enough. And when KF does try to get aggressive, with the blocked punt attempt, it bit us, completely giving MSU the momentum and flipping field advantage for the entire game. We got beat by at our own game there.

MSU started using more motion to throw off our defense and it seemed to work. Cook was also clearly hurting, and yet we never figured it out. MSU was running down our throats and we had bad tackling, but also played off in zone against the pass.

We were beaten in this game, but our adjustments were bad too.

The biggest thing that I noticed was we never once ran out of the 2 TE, FB and RB set. Not ONCE! The end result was 24 rushing attempts (5 from the QB). That's unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. Why wave the white flag and not even attempt to run what we've been running all year?
MSU ran the freaking wishbone in an effort to run the ball!
That's my only gripe about the game and I wanted to wait a couple of days before I shared it. I spent the whole time yelling at the TV - "RUN THE BALL!" It just didn't make sense to me. And we STILL almost won that game.

95% of the time I'd agree with this. This game however, in the 2nd half, I thought we should have kept every play in CJs hands either passing or QB draw (if he was healthy enough anyway). CJ is too talented not to use and MSU's front 7 is too good. There's a reason we have scored so many times in the 2 minute drill this season. If we were going to run it should have been Wadley or Mitchell.
