Offense

This offense has some potential guys. I think the Oline will continue to improve as they normally do.

RB combo is deadly. Still like to see Butler get at least 15 touches a game along with obviously continuing to work Wadley. I think Butler should be the short yardage guy, he always falls forward.

Fant is an absolute mismatch at TE. Had a guy beat by a good 5 yards for a big play but Stanley overshot him. He can be a game changer.

WRs. Easley has been a pleasant surprise. ISM looked good yesterday. I saw Brandon Smith out there some yesterday. My guess is they take some shots to him next week. He could emerge. MVB obviously solid.

We will go as far as Stanley can take us. Great stat day yesterday. He did miss a couple big plays. I hope he learns to use his legs more, one of the great things about CJB was his ability to pick up a first down with his feet on third down situations. Continue to improve, limit turnovers and this offense could be solid.

Fant is way better than I thought he would be, and I thought he would be good. Candy, Easley, and ISM seem like they give us close to an average wide receiver core. Which is a huge upgrade from what we're used to.

When I first read the bolded, my initial reaction was, "Come on, they are way above average!" But then I thought for a second and realized that is obviously not true. It is funny how quickly you can talk yourself into "your guys", as well as what a big difference it makes when receivers are actually schemed open.

I personally like all the hand wringing over 3 missed deep balls by Stanley. Stanley now has the narrative of not being able to throw the deep ball on this board. Because he missed 3 plays... in his 2nd start ever, as a true sophomore, on the road at probably the most hostile environment he'll see til the next time he starts in Ames. A game in which he threw for 5 TD's - no turnovers and pretty much went out and TOOK the game from ISU.

I think he "might" get better and the timing "might" get tighter with his WR's as he gets more reps.

I think this game was the perfect game for us as fans, the players and even the coaching staff. I don't know if it was a product of having to watch the game on my phone at a kid's football game with no sound or not, but I was kind of excited when we got down by 10 because at that point I knew we had to do something different. I think the mindset with everyone before that was to run the football, eliminate mistakes, and let our defense do the work. Iowa football right? But our defense got exposed somewhat (by nfl receivers mind you) and we were forced to change our mindset. This reminds me of 2004 in so many ways when the coaching staff had no choice but to trust Drew. The power of this moving forward will be the fact that we have a confident quarterback, receivers that know they quarterback has confidence in them (they are division 1 receivers so they can run and catch) and the coaching staff having confidence in everyone when it counts. The defense will be better, no doubt and our backs are elite. But now we know we can run and throw. I am looking forward to the rest of the season because I think we can play multiple ways.

On a sidenote, who didn't like that bubble screen with Vandeberg?

Also... I love the play calling. I mean, they weren't all winners, but that's not how football works. For BF's 2nd game, he called one heck of a ball game.

For those who say fans will complain about any offensive coordinator Iowa has, or Iowa will never be explosive on offense. No. Brian Ferentz in his second game calling plays is already better than any Greg Davis called game. Mixed the run and pass, took shots downfield, and exploited mismatches. I could not be happier with the play calling and am really looking forward to our potential on offense for once. Hawkeye fans rejoice.

Absolutely, Iowa is attacking on O - taking shots down field... I was extremely satisfied. Defense, was tested to say the least but it held when it needed to hold. Which is all you can ask. There are only a few teams on the schedule that are going to be able to manage to complete with that type of efficiency for an entire ball game and 2 of them we get at home.

I am enjoying this team as much as I ever have a KF coached team. It seems to have a competitive edge as opposed just trying to out technique the opponents.

I think most people are looking forward as to what it will take to win some tougher games on our schedule. ISU defense is poor, probably the second worst defense we will see all year behind NT.

The stats look great on paper but I was probably more impressed with the way he handled the environment and led the team as you have stated. Will he improve, yes, but make no mistake about it, if you miss three potential big plays on a normal day you will get beat, simple as that.

I'm not sure on that. Nebraska's D looks pretty bad. Gave up 42 pts, 400 yards in the first half. IL? Purdue?? Lil early to say that. I get what you mean tho, you want to hit on those plays...but what I mean is that just because Iowa didn't connect on a couple of them on Saturday does NOT mean they are never going to or that NS "can't" throw deep.

The offense looks good and I can only hope improves game to game. The defense got shredded. It's weird to say that I'm less worried about the offense this year than the defense. We rarely sent blitzes and never really got pressure on Park and our defensive backs looked putrid. He just stood back there and tore our DBs a new one. They should have a better game against North Texas obviously. We need the ol Iowa d back for when PSU comes to town.

I wasn't aware of anyone saying anything like that. Certainly not in this thread. As with most things it's probably not as good as it seems (ISU stat line / Best QB in the West) and probably not as bad as it seems (zero completions one interception in 1Q vs Wyoming & 3 turnovers).

I love Stanley's potential as our QB. His size and arm strength are certainly pluses. Does he have room to grow, absolutely, and I expect him to.

Before the season, I was pretty sure the defense was good, and the offense might be okay. The defense would have to keep them in the game, and the offense would have to find ways to scratch out some points. I take Saturday's game as one where the offense looks more capable than thought, and while the defense had a tough game, they'll bounce back and will be a solid, dependable unit. In the end, with a better than expected offense, and still a good defense, Saturday's win against TOE State was big positive for the rest of the season.

Excited about the offense as well. Defense... is what it always is. Schematically there are just things offenses are always going to be able to get. Spread teams have always and will continue to hurt us. Safeties always extremely deep and LBs often shadowing WRs as we stay in our 4-3 base 90% of the time. OSU killed us with Anthony Gonzalez a few years back and it was frustrating to watch. I just wish we threw in nickel a little bit more or a couple more blitzes. When we can't get a rush a good QB with good WRs can really move the ball.

On the other end, we don't give up many big plays and it usually isn't easy to string together 10 play drives without making a mistake at some point. Our def points against is usually pretty strong.

Offense to me: I'm more excited than ever.
Defense to me: Resignation that while frustrating to me, the bigger picture is better than what I'm watching usually.

If you go back and rewatch, we actually played a lot more nickel in this game than we historically have. In addition, there were no "union cards" in this game as Rugamba was pulled and didn't get back in...and it wasn't for injury.

The Union Card Club has been closed for a while. I mean, look at QB for that answer

Yeah it's almost a personel thing as much as schematic. ISU to give them credit have 3 really big and good WRs out there. We had Bower and Nieman trying to cover them at times along with safetys. We won't face that good of group of WRs all year I bet. That was quite the test. Park was a tad streaky but when he was good he was torching us. I thought we did play more nickel then normal. Hooker and Ojemedia were both in there quite a bit. In fact I was kinda pissed Hooker was who was on Lazard on his 2nd TD. He had no help and that was a terrible matchup for us. But I'm nitpicking now as I'm as fired up about where the offense is as I could ever be and defensivly I think they'll be just fine
