Offense Next Year

Many of us have said this... we need more , better perimeter shooters and shooting. Without it the lane gets clogged up and it makes it tough for all 5 hawks on the floor.

I would say we never had 1 consistently good 3 pt shooter this year. We need three on the floor and I am hoping oglesby, uhtoff, gesell, dickerson, and jok rotate as 5 good shooters, perhaps clemmons also.

We all know how much this will open up the rest of the game, especially inside.

Sure he did... Every once in a while.
Still a tweener and hoping we don't have to rely much on him.

I can only imagine how you view the rest of the team. When looking at stats it shows that Uthoff was both our best 3 pt and ft shooter. So what you meant to say was, I hope he continues his development and starts to shoot more often.

I'd like Fran to take a look at Michigan's offense. Look at how often Morgan/Horford get easy buckets on a pass from LeVert on a pick and roll play. We run that same play all the time but never use it to get the screener to score. Beilein and his team use ball screens so effectively, and we sometimes just waste time with them.

When you have four guys on the floor who can knock down three's, everything really open ups. Iowa had at least two guys who were either poor shooters (Gesell, McCabe) or hesitant to shoot (Uthoff, Oglesby) or both (White) on the floor at all times and that makes it much harder to get good spacing in the halfcourt.

Well the fact that our "best" 3 pt shooter was 4/18 from 3 in B10 regular season games, might go a long ways toward explaining some of our struggles.

I thought going into the year two things needed to happen for Iowa to contend for a B10 title, Marble needed to play like a first team All B10 player, he did, and someone (most likely Uthoff or Gesell) needed to step up as a third double digit scoring threat, that obviously didn't happen. I hope Uthoff makes a big leap next season, he is a good shooter, but he needs to stop being so passive and start shooting any time he gets a decent look. We need scorers in the halfcourt.

Judging by how Fran was using Woody and Jok towards the end of the year and how they were responding, those guys will score significantly more next year. Woody just being consistent enough to score 8-10/game would change the way a defence has to play us. Atwood could add another dimension up front as well.

About JU, our offence could been even more potent this year if Uthoff hadn't hit a RSFrosh wall mid-season. I believe he'll get stronger, but he's got work to do on his mental game to be a big offensive force.

I believe our offence will be strong again. The question is: who will emerge as a clock-winding-down scorer in the backcourt? Gesell will be better but can't take that whole burden. Jok would be nice if he can get consistent. TD will add a new dimension of quickness but is an unknown quantity in D1. JO will be a solid senior but would have to take it to a whole new level to be that guy.

Iowa didn't have one of those guys this past season and their offense still scored quite a bit.

Gesell was averaging 11+ points a game over the last 12 games prior to BTT tourney and game against Tenn. I thought Oglesby would score 10+ points a game and with Gesell scoring about 10+ the hawks would roll.

But the consistency wasnt there.

Here is hoping they get better and the shooting % improves.

Please the provide these stats you reference so I can gladly shred them apart.

Thanks.

Uthoff shot 42.5% from 3 to lead the team. Oglesby was next at 40.3%. Uthoff shot 81.7% from the line. White was next at 80.7%. I'm not looking to get in the middle of this quarrel...just posting the requested stats.

I agree w/you Volhawk, but in order for that to work, you need players that are a threat, and I mean players that take the ball, make a move, drive, or pull up, or make that pass that you described...At times it seemed like our team was lazy, or hesitant with the ball, and that cost us points...It seems like when I'm watching the tournament, there's like this weave-type offense that starts up top, and every time a player touches that ball, they are getting closer to the basket, or in other words, they are presented with better looks to the basket or someone cutting to the basket, or dishing off to a wing for a 3 ball...It's about quickness & being under control, and more importantly being patient...we need more threats to make that work....I agree, Fran needs to add a few more wrinkles...

Spacing is what makes Michigans pick and roll effective. Three other guys around the 3 line means the defense has to get out of the lane and can't sag in and cut off the roll man. The screeners defender has to honor Stauskas/Levert and show over the top of the screen leaving the lane wide open often.

Iowa had a lane that was normally congested because we usually had two guards on the floor and then 3 guys you don't really have to guard away for the paint.

Also, when Iowa runs a pick Marlbe is only looking to shoot, and Gessell is usually only looking to shoot. Clemons and Ogelsby would occasionally make a play on it because they were the only ones looking to pass.

This Iowa squad is one of the worst passing teams Ive watched play basketball. They choose the difficult shot over the easy pass almost every time.

I will probably take some heat for this, but I think Uthoff has the potential to be dominant. I think he deferred to other players too much this year. But towards the end of the year, he showed flashes, especially in the NW BTT game that he can change a game. Yes it was NW, but without him, it would have been even more embarrassing. I sometimes wondered if we had isolated him one on one at the end of games instead of Marble if we would have been better off. He's a tough match up. Marble struggled at the end of games. I'm not bashing Marble, it is what it is. I'm appreciative of everything he did as a Hawk, but he just flat out fell apart at the end of several games this year. I am hopeful that depending on someone else like Uthoff at the end of games next year will be a good thing.
Uthoff is hard to figure out. He makes some moves that are amazing but seems to lack confidence that he can do it consistently.

His impact has as much potential to expand as Woodbury and Joks IMO. I think just being in the game more often without the threat of being benched will do him allot of good.

I honestly think all three of them could be twice as good if not more next year.

Ogelsby and Marble definitely had certain games where they were knocking down lots of threes, even McCabe had some games early where he was very good, it just didn't happen nearly often enough.

Really we struggled badly to get good looks was the main problem and it makes perfect sense with the personnel the coach was putting on the floor. One guy who was basically only used for screens in Woodbury and then two guys in White and Basabe who seemingly had no role or purpose in our half court sets other than offensive rebounding and an occasional screen. You cant play that way.

Woody and Jok... 2 guys I'm looking at to increase their scoring from last year.

I'm hoping Uthoff can maybe do the same but not holding my breath.

Uthoff was looking for his shot more toward the end of the year. I'm sure Fran had been talking to him about it, and its pretty obvious he will want him to do the same next year. The more comfortable he gets, the better he will become at it.

I show Marble led the team in both with 52 3PM and 142 FTM.
In comparison Uthoff had 17 and 67, well less than half.

Point is simple... I don't give a crap what % you actually shoot. I'm not saying Uthoff is useless I just don't see him becoming the player that I think many are hoping to see. Same thing for White. I feel like a broken record I've said it so many times. These guys are tweeners.

I guess.. he had a couple games he shot the ball 6 times. Against MSU he wen't 0fer and he played really well against NW including 3 treys.

But against Illinois and Tenn he shot it 2 and 4 times respectively.

I care more about percentages...as it relates to future potential. We'll know for sure a year from now.
