Nicknames fill Iowa basketball roster - The Daily Iowan

Fran wanted Street on the back of all jerseys last year. I never heard this.
“I would either go with their God-given name, or no name at all. I don’t mind having their names on the back of their jerseys. Last year I wanted to put ‘Street’ on their jerseys, and we weren’t allowed to do that I’m going to tell you right now, there’s no way the NCAA will ever allow nicknames. It’s fun to talk about, but it will never happen. They’re very strict about that kind of stuff, uniforms, what goes on there. It was explained to me very thoroughly so I understand it.

Money Mike: I guess its better than Magic Mike?

Black Amigo (or Melly Jose) : Going after the exploding Hispanic demographic i see

Someone needs to tell Gabe his nickmname is now Zombie

Love Olasenis comment:

No. 0 Gabe Olaseni: Gabe: “That would be cool if I had a nickname. I guess they could put Gabe on the back, but that wouldn’t really be effective. It would be cool; it would be a lot of fun.”

My nick name in basketball was "Scrounge". I always hustled and ended up with most loose balls and 6 or 7 rebounds a game, at 6' tall. It helped that I was fast and had a good vertical leap but it was mostly hustle.
I had other nick names in other sports too.

Dude... thats awesome. I was never good enough to get a nickname

Jok: Peter Buckets

I can see though, how the NCAA would not allow this. There would most likely be nicknames that ended up being vague references to vulgar acts, drugs, sexual positions, etc. Not to mention slams at opponents.

Yes it has great potential for laffyness, but it isn't gonna happen and I'm fine with that.

Maybe the NCAA will make an exception for the Peter Jurkin's of the world. If anyone could use another name, it's that poor kid.
