Plenty of threads have been devoted to bashing Nebraska on this board. Rightfully so. They are a rival, they have an unfounded ego, and they suck at pretty much all sports. But now that the dust has settled, someone has to give credit where credit is due and illustrate a comparison.
Demographics. Both Frost and Kirk inherited nearly identical train wrecks at historic powerhouses in small population states. Push
State of the Program. Kirk took over a 3-8 program. Frost took over a 4-8 program. Push
Inherited Roster. Kirk inherited a squad with several star athletes (Bruce Nelson, Eric Steinbach, Ladell Betts, Kevin Kasper, Aaron Kampman). Frost inherited a squad with one or two star athletes (WR Morgan, RB Ozigbo, Barry). Push
Record. Kirk went 1-10. Frost went 4-8. Advantage Frost
Method of Building the Program. Kirk took over and built the program up the right way, without a lot of JUCOs or quick fixes. Frost took over and built the program up the right way, despite coaching in the "grad transfer" era, where it would have been easy to poach a starting QB to plug a gap (i.e. the Harbaugh method). Instead, Frost chose to start a freshmen QB in Adrian Martinez and got 500 yards rushing out of freshmen RB Maurice Washington. Push
Recruiting. Frost already has 5 commits from 4 star recruits and a Top 20 recruiting class. Kirk and Brian, on the other hand, still have ZERO commits from 4 star recruits and a Top 50 recruiting class. Advantage Frost
Trends. Nebraska went 4-2 in their last 6 games. Their two losses were close games against Iowa and Ohio State. The Hawks went 3-3, with close losses to mediocre teams. Advantage Frost
Head to head matchup. Iowa beat Nebraska, but it was a home game, on senior day, with a last second 3 point margin of victory. At Nebraska, the home field advantage likely shifts the score a bit. Advantage Kirk
Next Year's Roster. Nebraska graduates 4 on offense and 4 on defense. Iowa graduates 5 on offense (counting Fant) and 5 on defense. Advantage Frost
Ease of Next Year's Schedule. Nebraska plays Colorado in non-conference, and OSU at home from the East. Iowa plays ISU in non-conference, and at Michigan & home against Penn State from the East. Advantage Frost.
