NW going forward...

The biggest challenge I see for both NU and Minnie will be keeping these up and coming coaches. I really doubt they will be around long.

I agree, if I was looking for a coach Collins would be on my list. But he is from Chicago so there can be something said for being able to come home and he does have visions of turning NW into Duke.

I don't get it. Isn't "knowledge" (sp?) spelled with a silent k? I bet ya it stands for "N"ebraska -- makes more sense.

uh

irony: specifically, dramatic

knowledge is, of course, spelled with a silent "k."

the implication of the joke is that the huskers are not quote literate enough to have moved beyond simple phonetic spellings

therefore, the humor comes from the audience laughing at the earnest ignorance of the reply, especially considering that the helmets are worn by the team of, you know, a university

dude, it's an old joke. I heard it in IC in '82.

(disregard entire response if your post was written with an irony so subtle as to be nearly undetectable...then, kudos to you, sir.)

Aw man, you ruined it. I'm sure those of us that got the joke were all laughing at Stillbusters post, at least I was.

Talk about putting the cart ahead of the horse. This chump hasn't done squat and he is on a short list? I think his recruiting class is a bit over rated but he has won a couple big ten games (with some decent players left behind) so some high major AD should swoop him up. The coach K pedigree doesn't impress me at all. Quinn Snyder, Johnny Dawkins, tommy amaker, none of them have set the world on fire given their inherent advantages to do so. Collins was really good at slapping the floor and holding a clipboard for the better part of two decades. That's his resume. Oh, and he's under .500 at NU for his first season. As you can probably tell, I'm not a fan.

You must not be a fan of Fran, then, seeing as how he was 8-13 (1-8) at this point in his first season.

Omg. Seriously? Not even close to the same guy or situation. Fran had been a head coach at 3 schools (and taken them to the tourney) before landing at Iowa. This, HE EARNED it! Unbelievable what horrible comparisons people make on this board sometimes.

That post really wasn't that subtle.

Collins is a fine coach for a school like Northwestern. I like it and I think he will work out for Northwestern. I even think he could get them to the tournament. I like that Duke and Northwestern are similar schools so why not take a guy who worked for someone who was successful at that school and see if he can't create the success at the Northwestern. Amaker's done some good things at Harvard (who is even more in a bind because they don't do the scholarship thing in the Ivy Leagues)

But Johnny's right, he hasn't done anything to get him a look elsewhere.

So that justifies the fact that he had a worse record through 21 games than Collins does? Are we to conclude that every coach ever has not "earned" his first head coaching job?

I guess I look a little further past the won/loss record. I suppose you are in the same crowd that did not think Woodbury had a good game yesterday because Olaseni scored 14 points while Woodbury only scored 6.

Collins clearly outcoached Painter in the Purdue game, at the end of the game he had no one taller than 6-7 to guard Hammonds since they all had fouled out and he still found a way to win. This NW team sucks, I still say they are the worst in the B1G, I cannot imagine how Collins will do once he gets the players in there that are capable of running his system.

I am not in that crowd. I love Woodbury and where he is at in his development. Not fair to compare woody and olaseni to each other. They have different strengths and weaknesses.

I didn't realize this site had turned into a Collins circle jerk. I can't believe how people are saying he's a a success already. He won a couple games against other bad B10 teams, he's going to end up this year with 6 B10 wins max. Since we're comparing him to Fran's first team, the Hawks finished 2011 ranked 92nd in KenPom's ranking, NW is currently sitting at 148.

He's not going to consistently recruit anywhere near top 25 classes to NW. He sold a decent class this year, although I don't think they are a top 25 class, on the promise of the potential of NW. You can only do that for a year or two, at some point very soon he's going to be recruiting to a school with crappy facilities, small fan base and not much on-court success.

I agree. However, the Big 10 is a top tier basketball conference and has been for a very long time and BTN makes compensation less of an issue for all of our schools. There are a couple of likely factors IMO. Does Collins establish NW as a brand name before Coach K retires? Does Louisville want to replace 1 Pitino with another down the road?

Beilein has never served as an assistant coach. Was he a bad hire back in the day? Collins has a much better coaching pedigree at this point. Let's just wait and see what happens. I personally think the fact he's gotten 3 wins in the Big 10 is a shock...didn't think he would do this over the course of the season.

Duke has a crappy arena, but they still manage to get ball players. Gonzaga was once nothing, but they have developed a solid team. The Chicago area seems to churn out a huge number of top 100 players and has cranked out a whole bunch of superstars in the past few years. Collins looks like a very greasy basketball coach who understands the importance of Jimmy's and Joe's and I have no doubt he will attempt to play the recruiting game on par with the slimiest of the slimy and in all honesty, it would just take this current class and then landing one Davis/Parker/Rose caliber player out of Chicago who wants to stay close to home for Collins to have a completely legit team for one season. Of course, if that happens, dude will be gone to greener pastures immediately, but I think he's got a reasonable chance of doing it. I'm not saying he will, but he has a shot at it and I won't be the least bit surprised if NU competes for the conference crown in a few years before promptly falling back to Earth.

Yeah none of those guys are going to NW or probably even getting in if they wanted to. You sound like a DePaul fan, it just takes one big name guy to stay home and we're back! LOL Going on 25 years waiting for that to happen now. Tommy Amaker once wanted the NW job because he was going to turn into the Duke of the B10. Instead, he got a better job at Michigan and failed to even have Alford levels of success there and was quickly canned. Not going to end much better for Collins.

Collins is on my list for most annoying coach, with Pat Chambers, Bo Ryan and Tom Izzo. Refs need to control coaches and keep them off of the floor. Groce is close, he is a clown.

What is the big deal about being complimentary of other coaches in the league? Obviously I am completely satisfied with the job Fran is doing, I consider him one of the best in the B1G.
