NW game: Did Stanzi get facemasked?

I was just watching this replay on youtube; at 1:30 of the video is slow motion with No. 90's hand on Rick's facemask, should it have been a penality?

Yes he did. And that should have wiped away the touchdown on that play...and Iowa might still have won that game...probably still lose the Ohio State game and beat MN...and still wind up in the Orange Bowl

He definitely got facemasked that play happened right in front of me I remember screaming for a flag. Bob Brooks put up a video that highlighted the facemask on his website.

2 years in a row NW has taken out an Iowa offensive MVP with DIRTY PLAY! Thats a fact not an opinion, they are my most hated team in the Big Ten.

There is no doubt in my mind that Patty Fitz tells his guys to play dirty against the Hawkeyes, I think he still holds a grudge for that broken leg.

I liked Fitzgerald's explanation for the win after the game..."we won by playing Northwestern football"...which I guess means, "got lucky that we hurt their qb with a dirty play and sent Iowa reeling for the rest of the game"...

That being said, Iowa still should've been able to win that game.

100% agree. Fitz is a complete jerk. He teaches his d-backs to take shots at rbs who are stood up at the line, leading with their helmets, like they did to concuss Shonn in 2008. I was sickened by that play,as I saw Shonn's body go limp and the ball tumbled out his hands as he lost consciousness.

Then this year, no doubt that Fitz placed a bounty on Ricky as he knew it was his only chance to beat Iowa..taking out Ricky. That facemask was the coup de grace on Rickys ankle as the dtackle twisted his upper torso as the d-end pinned his leg under him....all well after the ball was gone out of Rickys hands...

I want Fitz to go 0-12 this year and every year...shoulda broke both his legs that day...total arse.

Ha, calling the Stanzi play dirty??? What was he supposed to do, lay him down nicely?? Its called football, you tackle people who have the ball.

No question about it that was a facemask all the way. Iowa should have got the ball back and the touchdown wiped out for Northwestern.

Did Ferentz try to use a challenge on that play? I don't remember if he did or not. Or can you challenge for replay on a missed facemask call?

You can't challenge penalties. Not even offsides call(stupid Florida Gators).

Fitz is a hell of a coach. He's easy to hate because of his intensity, so I understand the general sentiment of the board. Still, accusing him of having bounties on our players is ridiculous.

If those scenarios played out Iowa has an extra Big Ten trophy in their locker room though.

It's not a dirty play but that loss is a loss that still stings. Who knows with a healthy Stanzi they may have gone undefeated so that play stings quite a bit (thus overreactions such as calling the play dirty). Of course the Cyclones will never be in that situation so I understand the lack of empathy.

Most defensive linemen won't admit it, but they all seem to like to try to land on a QB's legs in those situations...not sure if it's taught or if it's just human nature to inflict as much pain as possible which also leads to injuries.

I think we were in that situation. Sound familiar? A freshman QB plays his first game on the road against a top team in a hostile environment. The only difference is that we won the game.

Wow some of the people on this board are complete morons. The Stanzi play was not a dirty play. The Shonn play, while he did lead with his helmet and may be a semi-dirty play, was not ordered by Fitzgerald. In 2008, we had a chance to win at the end and threw 4 times in a row. In 2009, an unfortunate play cost us our QB. We still had multiple chances in that game. Pull your heads out and just accept the fact that in those 2 games, Northwestern beat us

Great comparison...exactly the same situation! Bravo sir!

Wow, the clowns were 9-0 heading into that game? That's really impressive. How come I've never heard of this? Was this before or after the monkeys flew out of my butt?

Okay, definitely a facemask, but I have a question, since it's after the fumble. Would the refs have ruled it a TD and assessed the penalty on the kickoff? Or does a personal foul automatically wipe out the entire play?

Even if the TD stands, it still sucks that they missed the call. We got tons of crap for the supposed "bad calls" that went our way against Indiana. Then the very next week we have a non-call facemask on the biggest play of the game, followed by a phantom holding call on BW's big TD run.
