Notre Dame Football is a BRAND NAME....

We're busy arguing money and B10 network compared to ND and NBC. Let's not forget they're also a brand name and we ALL know where to find them on ANY given Saturday. What is that worth? It'a worth a lot. Far beyond the obvious.

Think about brands, in terms of clothes or anything, that you thought cool or meant quality years ago. Now, think of how those brands cheapened themselves. Now, I'm not saying the B10 is a cheap conference. And some of your think ND has cheapened through the years. However, put yourself in ND's shoes. They still think they're an 'it' name. By joining a conference they probably feel they're cheapening they're name by joining a conference. Part of it is about prestige. The other part is 'pack mentality', meaning being 'one of the crowd'. Suddenly becoming one of the crowd when you're a lone wolf can be difficult.

All of this is about the money, but yet it's not about the money. ND needs to feel whatever move they make was their idea and nobody forced them to do it. The B10 needs them to feel it's on their terms. In other words, the B10 needs them to make ND apart of the pack, but yet feel independent.

Like going swimming for the first time in the summer, ND sort a wants to test the waters and feel comfortable where they're swimming. The B10 needs to respect that and work with itl.

Simply put- ND doesn't want to fee they're selling themselves for the all mighty dollar. However..............

A brand needs consistency and frequency to survive. ND's problem is they are two brands. They are one brand to my father (Kings, a team to hate because they always win, tradition, power, prestige), they are another brand to me (washed up, frumpy, out of touch).

The problem with ND is one brand is going to die and the other is going to live on and it's not the one they want.

If they want my fathers brand to be dominant they have to join a conference.

That may be true, but it's arrogant thinking on our part. ND needs to come to the conference realization on their own. They need to feel it's their idea and on their terms.

It's not arrogant thinking at all. They don't need the B10 necessarily, they do need a conference.

One of the biggest ways to test if you matter is to look at who (or how many people hate you). People hate the yankees because they are consistently good. People hate the steelers and the cowboys because they win superbowls. My dad hates ND because they were always good. I don't hate them, and I don't know of a single person under the age of 30 who hates them. To me and my age group they are just another team, and to folks 20 and younger they are just another bad team.

It's not arrogant, it's realistic. Notre Dame insisting to remain independent by citing their "huge" TV deal, while that deal is dwarfed by the BTN's payout (BTN pays out 2.5x what ND gets from NBC) is arrogant. They just want to stand alone, because they and their fans still think it's the 1970's. The only problem is, it's NOT the 1970's, and before long, they may not be able to stand if they go it alone. They are following in Army and Navy's footsteps, and it won't be long before they are irrelevant. They need a conference, much more than we need Notre Dame.

We can wrestle with the semantics about whether ND needs to feel like they make the move because it's what they want or not. Personally, I think it's in their best interest to do it, whether they want to or not. Pride is a deadly thing sometimes, and if Notre Dame and their fans cling to theirs, it's going to be their downfall.

I'm under 25 and I hate ND. Why? No, it's not because they always win, but because they think they're too good for the B10 or any other conference. They play cupcakes to get their 6 wins and then sprinkle in some big ten teams (that currently aren't good) and a USC team and call it a great schedule. They believe that they deserve the BCS every year, oh and the homers that are in the ND boat (aka Dr. Lou) that think ND will be undefeated every year.
That's why I hate ND.

Hawk I don't disagree with your comments. However, it is crap or get off the pot time and the ball is in their court. If they want in fine, if not fine. They just can't come back around in a few years saying sorry now we want in. Brand name or not the reality of college football is changing. Whether it is for the better or not is another thread but there is no denying the good old days are gone.

More brand names: Pony, BK Knights, RC Cola...

But they aint no more

Just to name a few more
LA Gear, Pepe Jeans, Kangaroos (don't laugh, I believe "The Fridge" wore these shoes)Plymouth, Oldsmobile, Cyclones (Oh, wait, my bad, that last one never was a brand name)

Unless you are of the status of Budweiser or Coke, the brand will fade.

I'm under 30 and I hate ND as well. My grandpa went to ND and my dad is a fan as well, although not a huge fan. It seriously drives me nuts. I dislike everything they stand for. They are think they belong on the pedestal because of their previous triumphs. The whole coaching search every 4 or 5 years is getting old as well. I would also say the likes of ESPN and NBC do a great job of putting them up on a pedestal. The amount of coverage of the Brian Kelly debacle was ridiculous. I can't stand them I get disgusted just talking about them.
Would it be good for the Big 10? Probably, but I would like to see them get their butts kicked in someone else's conference. I don't want to be around the day I hear ND won the Big 10 and is headed to the Rose Bowl. Doesn't that just disgust anyone else?
