Notre Dame at Big Ten Meeting?





It is said that the AP released it, very interesting, I just want to go to 12 teams and Notre Dame or Neb would suit me fine.
 




Matt Swarz tweeted this to Teddy Greenstein. Sounds like AP initially mentioned Swarbrick in attendance, but then removed it from the article.

mattsarz @TeddyGreenstein Never mind. AP article I linked has since been updated and the ND reference, specific to Swarbrick's attendance, is gone.
 


NDs TV package with NBC only guarantees NBC home broadcasting rights of ND football games. I could see a scenario where the Big10 allows ND to keep some, most or all of this in order to join the Big10 but require ND to cancel the contract once the current deal expires. ND agreed to an extension with NBC that would take it to 2015.
 




Delaney's comment about invititing teams in phases causes me to believe that Nebraska and Mizzou are coming on in and ND later if they want.

This is what I am thinking...invite those two...then wait to watch what the Pac 10 does, and once that seismic shift happens, ND will pretty much have to nut up, or go it alone.

Either he's got a 4th school in mind that will join if given the opportunity, or expect the Big Ten to take EITHER Nebraska or Mizzou (assuming the phases scenario plays out). If they take both and ND decides not to join, then we are left needing another school. Delany doesn't seem the type to put him self in that position unprepared.

If they bring in Nebraska or Mizzou, then they've got 12 for sure. If Notre Dame then says "count us in", then the Big Ten can then invite the other Big 12 school to get 14. That's certainly a much safer course than taking both Big 12 schools only to have Notre Dame say "no thanks", unless there's a 4th school with very strong interest.

I'm also basing this on MY desire to go no higher than 14 teams. If the actual plan is 16, then forget everything I just said.
 


If the Pac 10 is indeed going to 16 teams, the hunch would be that the Big Ten will match that. ND, Nebraska, Mizzou, and two teams from the east would get it done.

Funny, I just wrote in another thread that it might be a good idea for the B10 to invite the obvious players Nebby, Missou, and Rutgers and then do a little due dilligence on the not so obvious choices.

I keep saying this, but it is important to keep in mind. Fox has a hand in all this. They see an expanded B10 and an expanded P10 as their best options for networks. They have no interest in keeping the status quo in the Big 12.

Fox wants to get in on the land rush, there is no doubt about it. They are the likely reason that the ACC just doubled their TV revenues from their old contract, because they got into a bidding war with ESPN...they see that the land is about all bought up. They own a 49% stake in the BTN, and that is paying off for them.

It's like a team poker tournament, the other guys raises ante, and whoever wins, they all share that GIGANTIC POT OF GOLD!

Big Ten West? This would be a great eight.
Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Missouri

I will guarantee you it is not true. Even those this was not a formal meeting of the BT presidents, and therefore the presidents could agree to have outside parties sit in for informal talks. there simply is NO WAY that they would meet with the Notre Dame Athletic Director; if they were going to invite ANYONE from Notre Dame or any other university it would be the president or chancellor of that institution or his/her representative, at minimum somewone like the provost of veep for academic affairs--most likely someone involved with the research activities of that institution. It would NOT be an athletic director or coach.

Needless to say the BT presidents talking to the ND athletic director would not go down well with the ND administraton.

Moreover not all the BT presidents were even at the meeting, and the rules require all member institutions to take part. Eight are enough for a quorum, but not enough for any action to be taken. The most that could take place in such a situation is that they could inform about the BT intentions, discuss the process, answer questions, advise another party to communicate to the BT office its interest (or disinterest) in seeking BT membership.
