Notebook: No-Visit Policy for Iowa Commitments Still in Place, Injury Update, New Punter?

I seem to recall with the Eno thing the coaches said if he would have communicated with them they may have been more receptive. Holding out hope for Jestin but even if we do honor our offer there is a halfway decent chance he just decides he’d rather go to OSU. Can’t blame him.

For Tyrone Tracy I think it would make the most sense to not play him the next two weeks and then give him tons of reps in bowl prep and the bowl game. But sometimes logic seems to escape this staff.

@RobHowe

What’s the status on DJ Johnson? With not a whole lot to play for this season I think he would be a perfect candidate to get some reps and experience these last few games. I heard he was looking good once he returned from his injury healthy. If it were me, I would say Brents, Hankins, and DJ would rotate at the corner spots these last few games. In my mind those are our guys going forward.

Nooo?

Kirk loses another top recruit. What's new?

It's OK...........he was beyond Iowa's primary 3 hour drive recruiting range. You know, turn over lots of rocks in the backwoods and then develop them. He is a star so probably won't "fit" well.

The no visit policy is going to only cause more attrition to an already bad recruiting situation. In today's age recruits see themselves as entitled rock stars and whether you think that's good or not, it's true.

Of course recruits seeing the Hawkeyes playing really shitty football and keeping good players on the sidelines will hurt a hell of a lot more.

I'm not sure how any WR or TE would want to come here if they see a guy with Fant's talent not playing (whether TJ is playing or not). All it does is send the message to high schoolers that no matter how good you are, you have to be on Ferentz's good puppy list or you ain't seeing that field.

You better believe if I'm Scott Frost, Paul Chryst, or any other Big Ten coach I'm going to beat that into recruits heads if I'm competing with Iowa. "See what they did with Noah Fant? You could be a first rounder and if Kirk doesn't like you you're going to ride the pine."

Agree.

Anyone ever stop to think that TJ is just better??
He runs great routes (Nate's words)
He catches almost anything thrown his way.
Plus he himself said at the beginning of the year he was really focused on his blocking.
Is Fant good? Sure, but maybe TJ is more complete and refined and not a "specialist".
Which explains the playing time.

Remember everyone has said Iowa has 2 of the best TE's in the country. Who's to say TJ isn't the better one?

Isn't that what we have been asking for? Isn't that part of the new philosophy in the program? Best player plays regardless if they are younger or not.

Kirk said Tuesday that we could see some more guys who haven't played at all or much down the stretch. DJ can play all three games left and still red shirt.

We'll see. For KF and company, they can't lose either of these games just from an optics standpoint. Will they play true freshmen with that in mind? Again, we'll see.

Never said he wasn’t.

My entire post was about the effect it could and probably will have on recruiting. Fant gets huge exposure nationwide and that’s what recruits, media, and opposing coaches will key in on.

It’s not about who’s best; it’s about perception going forward.

And I don’t know anyone outside of the Iowa staff (media or otherwise) who thinks it’s a smart move to leave Fant on the sidelines. Until they start winning tons of games with him playing single digit snaps (which won’t happen because he’s gone June 24th) the results are confirming it.

I get what you’re saying, but we’d be kidding ourselves to think that losing one or even two of these last games would have any effect on the guy’s job security, and that’s all that actually counts. There’s really no such thing as a hot seat with Iowa football until there isn’t a Ferentz in charge.

I don’t doubt that KF tries to win every ballgame and I’m not a guy who would say he flat out doesn’t care. But don’t we all think that if he had some skin to lose there’s be something there making him try to dig deeper and get out of the ruts he finds himself in a lot of times?

Agree. My comment wasn't made with the thought of him being on the hot seat. He's absolutely not in the eyes of his bosses.

My point is that they're going to do everything they can to win these last three games, get to 9-4 and say it was a successful season. That's why I don't believe we're going to see much from the true freshmen the rest of the way.

I think the fan pressure affects Kirk more than we think. If we're honest with ourselves, Kirk's job was just as safe as ever following 2014 and 2016 despite limping to the finish in the former and unmet expectations in the latter. The guy is locked in here, but like a cornered animal he fights harder when backed into a corner, even if the threat is more perceived than real.

I guess I look at it as why wait until you get backed into that corner to fight harder, but I hear ya.

For the benefit of the doubt, let’s agree that Hock is the #1 TE — which WR is better than Fant? And not only better but limiting him to less than 25% of the offensive snaps?

I’m all for defending Ferentz’s ball control offense and passive defense (I like the ball-control but would be much more aggressive on defense)— even at times when it doesn’t work because sometimes the other team just beats you.

I’m not going to defend him when it just stupid stuff and beating yourself (which can happen too.) But it cannot happen repeatedly during the same season — to invent new ways of losing repeatedly and/or not correcting glaring weaknesses.

Nope. Inexcusable.
