James Butler returned to practice this week. The senior running back has been sidelined since injuring his elbow in Week 3. That, other injury news and more in this week's football notebook:

I understand injuries have screwed up the chemistry with the offensive line, but Iowa really does need a second back. Preferably, one with some physicality. I love me some AW.....he just isn’t the guy who is getting yards after contact.

That’s good. It’s nice to have the opportunity to go to the “hot hand” when we are struggling

i'm disappointed that TY and IKM weren't given more of an opportunity. I still believe that we must go with a 2 tb set (no fb) if we insist on being run heavy/priority. If neither is ready now, then what the hell were we going to do if JB hadn't transferred? sometimes, this iowa staff is down right illogical.

Everyone wants the young guys to get opportunities - completely ignore the fact that a lot of them have shit the bed with given the opportunity.

IKM got the opportunity to START last week... right? That's a pretty good opportunity. How did he reward the coaches? Basically handed over momentum IMMEDIATELY to an inferior team that put Iowa in a hole from the word GO.

I want them to play more too - looks like we absolutely need it, but I don't know how you can put that on the staff when they were given the opportunity fairly early into their careers.

Toren Young hasn't exactly shit the bed. He's done just as well with his carries as James Butler per attempt; IKM has 3 touchdowns and 3.2 yds/carry more than Butler this year. What stats are you going by that say they're shitting the bed? Toren Young also gets more yards after contact.

Toren is a Freshman RB who has close to 30 carries in game 6, while playing behind two upper classman. He's gotten opportunities and done well with them. His roll will continue to grow as he learns the college game and the coaches earn more trust. Again, IKM got the start last week and SHIT THE BED.

You have to do better than that.

He lost a fumble, yep. But guess what...Iowa is 125th out of 129 FBS schools with 9 lost fumbles. I'd say that's a team problem.

Martin had 22 yds on 2 carries, 1 reception with a TD. Were those awesome stats? No. Did he get a chance to rack up yards? Also no. If you're going to say he and Young shit the bed then back it up.

Iowa always has players on a short leash in regards to turnovers. It was true with AW it's true with these guys. When given the opp you have to take advantage. Putting the ball on the ground just outside the redzone is probably the closest to crapping the bed as you can get.

Butler is a good blocker in single-back sets as well. His ability to do that allows Iowa to use Wadley in the slot when they're on the field together. I don't think the coaches are comfortable yet with the freshmen doing that.

Which isn't a surprise - and typically the reason you don't see young backs in college or NFL come busting out of the gates (though that changing in the NFL) ... at least to START the season - it's a gradual build. It's not a shocker that KF keeps the leash even shorter against better teams. But he gives opportunities. Wadley got em - fumbled. Daniels got em - got hurt. I think if Butler is not back, they are going to feel more comfortable giving the younger guys reps after having a bye week.

You're to easy Fry... It's easy to do better. Everyone wants to see the younger guys play...get opportunities - why doesn't Ferentz play the young up coming talent, give them chances and opportunities .. cause they often shit the bed.

- IKM has 2 fumbles (FR), Stanley has 4 (SO), Brandon Smith has 1 (FR)- Easley has 1 (new comer), Butler has 1 (new comer), and Wadley has 1. That sounds like a bunch of NEW guys getting opportunities making mistakes. Iowa is still giving them opportunity DESPITE that tho.

Young guys make mistakes. IKM looks to be something special, and Young is a physical back we haven't had in awhile. Sure Butler has been a little better with ball security, but him playing pattycake in the backfield hurt us numerous times. I honestly expected more of him after the build up of him transferring to Iowa. But he's nowhere near as physical or strong of a runner as he was made out to be.

Stanley has 6 fumbles with 4 lost. Guessing you don't think he's "shitting the bed".

No, I'm a big fan. He has the ball in his hands every single play. He'd himself agree that he needs to secure the ball better. My point in all of this, is posters get wild about young guys not getting their opportunity when it's pretty clear that turnovers is a big part of that. You could argue that Iowa would be undefeated if it wasn't one of the worst turnover teams in the country. That's because theirs a youth movement going on all over the field.

I think IKM has looked awesome in the reps he's gotten. He's had one fumble but that is too small of a sample size to read into. This is all about Kirk being afraid to play a new guy over someone with experience. He wants too bad but he can't bring himself to do it unless he has to.

Hey Rob, you going to call out this or only posters who typically don't toe the company line? Just looking for a little consistency.

I think there's a pretty big difference. One - I think IKM is a tremendous athlete who is going to be a great Hawkeye. I am giant supporter of his and I hope he gets more touches and I can't wait support him for the next 4 years. He got himself into the dog house on his first big opportunity. I don't think that's criticizing him - it's what happened. He squandered it. If you think I shouldn't use the S word, then sure, you got a point. But I wasn't malicious or disrespectful in the least towards any player.
