Notebook: Coach Ferentz Squashes Akrum Wadley-To-NFL Talk

From the article:

“I was there six years, witnessed it. It’s an extremely competitive business. It’s not a real sensitivity, go find yourself, you know, hey, we’re with you while you’re developing and all that kind of stuff. They’re really not into that. It’s like most jobs where you’ve got to produce or they move you out, and maybe more so than most jobs.”

Reading between the lines it is obvious he was never going to the NFL. I credit him for his NFL experience and being able to keep a job in that environment. But he interviewed for the Iowa job cuz he wanted out. And he has never wanted back in. Buffoons Bowlsby & Barta really are embarrassments to their profession.

We are losing some great players after this year but for some reason I just feel like next year will be a eye opennimg season and that we will be much better than anyone expected and the same will said about the quarterback play. I am typically very conservative on predictions but this isn't based on logic just a gut feeling.

Barta is a puppet figurehead, nothing more. He has zero power over the football program regardless of what anyone thinks. The donors and Kirk Ferentz are his bosses, in that order.

He's there for appearances and to assume the risk as the fall guy for Bruce Harreld if shit hits the fan, a la Tracey Griesbaum and Kathleen Willier.

Disappointed that he wasn't asked about his job being in jeopardy. Who are these guys asking these questions?

Back to topic:. That is really good news about Wadley. I think Akrum knows enough to talk this through with the coaches, so the fact that he hasn't is good news.

For everyone who thinks that KF dislikes Wadley, read the article. That is about as glowing of a review KF gives. He was extremely complimentary. Yes, he tossed out Akrum's weight again, but I think he does that because it is true, not to put Wadley down.

Thank you for getting the discussion back on point. I agree that it's good news for us.

I wonder of AW is ever going to be able to get much above 190. I talked with him in the off-season and he tries hard to add the weight and it's just a constant battle.

That said. I don't think being 185-190 pounds keeps him from having an NFL career. He's just not an every-down back.

And for the last time, get over KF's contract and money.
1. KF's contract is to protect the fan base from itself, because the Athletic Department understands Iowa football a lot better than most of the fans.
2. Ask yourself, if your employer offered you a 25% raise, would you take it or say, no, I think I should only get 5%. Because if you said that you would say that are either dumb, or lying to yourself.

He won't get much higher than 190 using NCAA and NFL approved methods. But the coaches want him to get as close as he can to it, for his own safety and as proof of him being fully invested in the program. From all accounts, he really pushed himself to get there and it really does show in his performance and work load this year.

What is the big difference between 185 and 190? The guy is a football player at any weight. I don't get the harangue over his weight.

Not an insider so I can only speculate, but:
Safety - spread 5 pounds of muscle to certain areas and you can go a long way to preventing injuries to wrists, ankles, and the neck.

Force - physics teaches us that force = mass*acceleration. Wadley has acceleration and then some. But he is light on mass. A 5 pound difference would mean almost a 3% increase in mass for the young man. Multiply that by the acceleration and then some he has and that is a big increase in force. This plays into:

Style of play - Wadley's move are most apparent when he is running in-between the tackles. Jump cuts in space are great, jump cuts in traffic can be phenomenal - ask Michigan. The ability to call the entire playbook with Wadley on the field makes him much more dangerous and our offense much less predictable.

It was part of his strength and conditioning program - The easiest way to tell how invested a kid is in on the program is how closely they stick to the strength and conditioning program in the off season. You will find athletes that only show up for the games, some that only show up for the season, and some that bleed for a program year round. All coaches want the ones that show it all year round. KF demands it of his team.

Ferentz interviewed at Iowa because he wanted 'out'? Lol....Do you like ever read what you type before you inflict us with your inane nonsense? Seriously.... You 'crazies' just type whatever ridiculous impulsion that pops into your empty heads, don't you....But hey, I could be wrong (not), please show us your 'source' that he wanted out. We'll wait.....

Funny, KF said about exactly what I said about Wadley going pro....I need to start writing for this site as KF and Rob, etc...just repeat what I say.
