Not-So-Subtle Reminder Of Where We're At

Where Iowa basketball is at is solidly in the bottom tier of the Big Ten.

Fran McCaffery appears to be a good coach, but it is too early to tell if he can get Iowa out of the bottom tier of the conference. He is going to have to land a program-changing recruit in the next couple of years to get things turned around. Coach McCaffery and staff are working hard at recruiting, but it remains to be seen if they are effective recruiters.

i think you can argue that our two best players are Fran's guys, so he's shown he can find talent, just needs to find more of it.

Excellent point. There also needs to be statewide understanding that every Iowa prep that can dunk a basketball and dribble with both hands doesn't deserve a scholarship at Iowa. There are plenty lower level conferences for these kids to play in and our need for talent, not projects, has never been more acute.

+a trillion. We ultimately need guys that can get their own shot, and can beat their man. Cartright can do it, and Basabe can kind of do it right now. Other than that, there isn't a single guy on this team that beat his guy with any consistency (I guess Brommer can pull some stuff every now and again).

Fortunately, unlike Lick, I'm pretty sure Fran realizes this.

I am still baffled by this post and your response. We don't need shooters, but we need guys that can get their own shots? Isn't that needing shooters? Unless a guy is going to drive down the lane and go Dominique Wilkins and windmill dunk, they eventually have to pull up and hit a jumper right? Cartwright can get his own shot and within 15 feet is pretty decent. Gatens is 3's only, May is dunks only and McCabe and Marble are bricks only, thus our scoring problem.

Here is the thing you have to understand about the Hawks right now. There is not one person playing their appropriate position besides Cole. Cartwright is not suppose to be the only pt guard in his first year in the BIG 10. Basabe is not suppose to be the main man as a true freshman . Gatens is suppose to be getting looks from an inside out game, or a driving player kicking it out. Not be asked to drive and be a ball handler. Marble has prolly suffered the worst being asked to play point. The list goes on . Wait a couple of years then add a basabe and cartwright to the team and see what happens.

It's not the same thing. You can be a shooter without being able to get your own shots. Players like that need someone else to set them up with a shot. They can't create their own (see: Gatens). Cartwright can hit consistently from inside 15', and he can create his opportunities.

We DON'T NEED SHOOTERS!!!!!!!! We need wings that can penetrate and create their own. We need one spot up shooter that can light it up from outside and the rest should take it to the rack....aka Minnesota, OSU, Illinois, etc.

We lack height inside and wings that can penetrate. If a D never has to worry about you taking it to the rim OR an offensive presence inside then they can close out without risk of you making them look stupid.

This was an ugly game but as someone said, it's just one game. You could see the coaching going on and you could tell that the players want no part of what they just experienced again. That's a good sign. Just like the Jets v New England, bury the damn ball and move on.

I agree. What we don't have is shooters who can create off the dribble. When forced to, they miss and then start missing stand-still shots. Fran already has another shooter coming in, Oglesby, and White is supposed to be a pretty good shooter for his size. I trust the coaches. What they have been recruiting is penetrators. Most penetrators are PGs to those who say we don't need another PG because of Payne. That's not the point. We need another penetrator in the rotation who will play at the same time. Note, another player being recruited is Chievous, a SG, for the same reason- another penetrator off the wing.
