Northwestern cheap shots/dirty hits

Well said Plano. Short and sweet. If the refs aren't calling holding on cornerbacks then I would hope our players do it too. This is football.

The quality of the NBA has been reduced to a joke because the refs have taken away the defenders right to play aggressively. There is no defense anymore because when they play hard they either foul out or risk getting T'd up. Look back at when Jordan, Bird, and Magic marveled us on the court. It was a completely different game (one worth watching). Football wouldn't be the same without hard hits and big rivalries. I'd hate to see the NFL or college football be reduced to what the NBA has become. Tons of offense, with little defense because the defenders have to second guess every decision they make.

I think Clayborn should rip off Persa's head and then take it over to the sidelines jab a pole into and give it to Stanzi to throw across the field into Fitz's heart so the last thing he sees is the decapitated head of his QB staring in his face.

How's that for over the top bulletin board material?

Really is just a game. The hit on Shonn was the standard at the time. Glad that standard is going away. The facemask was a missed call by the ref who was looking at the ball. Both unfortunate.

Is it wrong that this made me smile? I could even see it happening in slow motion.

Stanzi got his head ripped back by the facemask. No question about that. Was it an accident? Maybe, but reading Jon's article about Fitz's hatred toward Iowa puts that incident in question.

I think Fitz is a thug who coaches his team to play that way. They get away with it because they're sweet little Northwestern.

That Stanzi injury play was about as dirty as it gets.

This has to be one of the worst posts I've ever seen on any board. Pat Fitzgerald a thug? Are you f'ing kidding me?

Fitz is a good coach with a huge chip on his shoulder about Iowa. His players always seem highly motivated, and play very aggressive.

Cheap? Nah, I think all Hawkeye fans would love to see the same kind of intensity from the Hawks toward NU. Maybe after last year's game, Karma has been satisfied (Fitz/Rose Bowl vs. Stanzi/OSU,possible National champ game bust) and Iowa can match NU's zest for this game...

Don't think Ferentz will ever have the kind of testosterone rush for NU, as Fitz does for the Hawks...

Should be interesting tomorrow... especially if they are playing in muck.

Sorry, beg to differ. Helmet to helmet was a penalty in 2008. Refs missed the call, but NW specialized in that hit. Watched them do it in other games. Just like they specialize in grabbing receivers running in the secondary...PSU fans noted it last week. Fitz has an approach...play dirty all the time, and make the refs call it.

Yes, they were illegal in 2008, but they still have been the standard. These players haven't developed this just since they got to the pros. They have been doing it in college for years without it getting called. Really only was getting called when it was a QB.

Interesting thing is that I have been watching the pros the last couple of weeks and have seen at least a couple of turnovers when defensive players came in to attack the midsection and the ball instead of the player's head, during plays when I was expecting the head shot.

Sure, Northwestern is a bunch of thugs. They are also number 20 on the list of least penalized teams, and have the best graduation rate in the BT almost every year (and many years that rate is 100%). Call them what you want, but thugs? Thats just ridiculous.

You guys and your conspiracy theories. Your beef is with officials not throwing flags, not Northwestern players on covert head hunting missions.

Hopefully you're right, farmgirl, but if you watch enough NW football the pattern is clear. It's not just Iowa fans who've noticed. Anyone want to bet on a high-low against Clayborn in the Cats' first offensive series?

If that happens, and I pray it does not, my dream would be to see Sash head straight for Fitz at high speed and take him out. I know, classless, but I'm feeling chippy today.

Which raises a meta-point. It is a truly great thing that our team and coaching staff have far more class than us message board warriors.

If NW is intentionally playing dirty against Iowa because their Coach hates us over some college game back in the day that kept him from going to the Rose Bowl or whatever... so be it. But, if he is coaching his players to hate Iowa and to play dirty... that is another. From what has been said by his player... this may be true. I never support playing dirty, but I don't think anyone needs to let a team play dirty without payback either. If I were KF I would have a talk with Fitzgerald before the game and find out from what he says and what actions he has. If he is coaching to injure college students... wow.

Just concerned with the last two seasons the Wildcats taking out Greene and Stanzi and playing "dirty" as some would call it (Stanzi was a clean tackle). Anyone worried that NW tries to aim for Robinson's helmet? We've seen what NW has done and with A-Rob coming off a concussion, will NW use that to their "advantage" and go for a helmet-to-helmet just to take him out? Wouldn't surprise me if this is what Fitz is coaching, albeit not in an obvious way.

I know that you and I have hashed this out on twitter, but is there anything you don't worry about?
