NonCon Confusion

I'm a bit confused. Iowa is getting blasted for it's NonCon schedule. Yet if you look at the KenPom top 40 for games through December 20 (Iowa is currently 41), 6 of them have NonCon SOS of worse than 300. (Iowa's is currently 321) Those teams are:

KP Rank Team Record NonCon SOS
======= ==== ====== ==========
5 Pittsburgh 11-1 302
11 Cincinnati 11-0 323
22 Mississippi 8-1 324
24 Missouri 9-1 320
25 Notre Dame 11-1 318
40 Oregon 9-2 314

And that doesn't include another 7 that are in the 250 to 300 range. (Those include INDIANA, Syracuse, OHIO STATE, Virginia, Georgetown, St. Mary's, and Iowa State.)

I think Iowa's strength of schedule is just fine. We need wins and confidence going into the B1G portion of our schedule. And our schedule is no more cupcake than anyone else's.

Just my $.02 .. ..

GO HAWKS!!!

It is just fine. Iowa's non-conf SOS was worse last year and we ended up with the 38th toughest schedule in the country. We'll be in the 20-40 range in overall SOS again this year.

We're also now in the top 50 in both offensive and defensive efficiency.

Iowa's schedule isn't the problem necessarily. The problem is making assumptions about how far back this team is based on that schedule. There is little in the schedule to assume Iowa will be dancing. Reason for optimism...yes, but not making an assumption.

Indiana improved themselves last year as has many of the others. None of them dipped as low and for as long as Iowa. Not sure why you would bring up ISU though. That is another case to ? the Hawks measured improvement.

Yeah. I think this accords with my perception that many decrying the schedule are actually Hawk fans. If anything, I've been seeing media mentioning our 10-2 start in a positive light with no caveats.

i agree with this. i have a problem with the cupcakes on our schedule just because they are soooooooooo bad. we can schedule cupcakes in the 200-250 RPI range rather than some of the worst D-1 team on the planet. it would only help our RPI.

Who exactly is "blasting" Iowa for their non-con schedule?
OK .. maybe 'blasted' was too strong a term. I apologize.

My point is that on other threads, people have been complaining that our SOS is so poor and that it will affect the team's chance of getting into the Dance. (I'll have to do some digging to find the threads/posts again.) It lead me to believe that other schools ahead of the Hawks on the KP rankings had significantly better SOS than the Hawks. But that just isn't true, especially Indiana and OSU. That's what lead to my confusion.

GO HAWKS!!!

Well I guess the Hawks NCAA tourney chances are screwed if any members of the selection committee reads this board then.

Iowa has made it through so far. They are a young team and need the confidence of wins, the schedule will get harder next year and the year after. It's more about conference play now and how they do in the last 10 games before selection Sunday.

Nice post. As I said after the Gardner Webb game, there is no such thing as a bad win. If the Hawks dont come back and beat Gardner Webb then we have that bad loss our resume.

Nobody is going to mention that Gardner Webb had the Hawks down 20 at the half on Selection Sunday if the Hawks are on the bubble.

Although closely tied together... I don't think SOS is the concern but rather quality wins.

We'll have plenty of opportunties come Big 10 season.

according to Kenpom Iowa has played 7 teams in the top 150 and 5 inside the top 80 to date
Iowa has played just 2 above the 300 mark in UTCC at 329, and U of South Carolina at 345.
the last 4 are between 273 and 298. this is one reason why I don't understand how they can have Iowa's SOS to be around 310-320

Now that we all can just relax, catch our collective breaths and look forward to the "regular" season... several of you folks have pointed out Iowa's OOC schedule has been just fine this year.

The thing is there are always of handfull of posters.. errr.. possers who will diss any thing Hawkeye.
