Regardless of the name of the bowl, it is clear we need to completely re-evaluate our bowl preparation again. We did the same thing after getting blown out by USC in the Orange Bowl at the end of the 2002 season. But now that our 4-game bowl losing streak has exceeded even Hayden Fry's bowl futility record (his worst streak in bowls was 0-3-1, one of which was also a Rose Bowl), we need to look at EVERYTHING. And we might start with the following:
+Because we travel so well, we will frequently be awarded bowl invitations above where we ordinarily would. That means we will ALWAYS be an underdog, and going up against a better team;
+We are out of our element no matter where we go - the distractions, in almost any bowl, will get in the way unless we have a plan how to deal with each of them. We just can't "let the trip happen" - which we clearly did in Pasadena;
+We will not have played in several weeks, and good KFz teams are always at their best when they have been playing recently. Since that can't happen at a bowl, we have to develop better strategies so we can "find our mojo" quickly - it took Stanford one whole play;
+It would help if we can stay consistently good so that a bowl like the Rose won't come in as the greatest thing to happen to Iowa in the last 25 years - our Sr's. will have seen enough to keep everything in perspective for our younger players.
Have NO idea (obviously) what will happen next year. But knowing KFz, our bowl preparation will improve dramatically, and we WILL win whatever bowl we do end up in. And by the way, I'm going to make a first prediction for our bowl at the end of next season - Citrus in Orlando (or whatever it will be called).
