No more onside kicks?

You have to now allow the player to catch the ball on an onside kick. I think he just said that they can fair catch an onside kick.

This is really dumb.

The new rule is that the ball has to bounce two times or the receiving team must be given at least a 1-yard halo in which to catch the ball. It essentially eliminates the "high-bounce" onside kick, but not other, mult-bounce onside kicks.

It's because the "high bounce" kick places the receiving player in an injury-prone defenseless position.

I don't get the starting at the 25 thing because that goes against them trying to get teams to have more touchbacks. Teams are probably better off trying to kick it shallow endzone or inside the 5 and having teams try to run out because of where the kickoff starts now.

The idea is that it encourages return men to stay in the end zone and not bring it out from several yards deep. More likely, I think, is that kickers will work on kicking it high and short to pin them inside the 25.

And the pussification of football continues! Yay!

Do some football and concussion research and see if you still agree with the comment you just made.

If we want this game we all love to be around for years to come things need to change to protect the athlete.

There is no question that the brain is damaged while playing this game whether it be middle, high, college, or pro football.

The game is WAY more violent than it was 25 years ago, but morons like you think any rule change for player safety is "pussification".

It is in the minds of us who pay a lot of money for the entertainment and to support our team. Why not just eliminate kickoffs altogether and just start from the 20 or 25, that's essentially what it amounts to now.

Im fine with the kick off changes other than the onside kick. The official that was on BoneG said it was because players were jumping to catch the ball and then being up ended. If thats the case are they going to make a rule that the player must have one foot on the ground before he can be tackled? Onside kicks makes a very small amount of the times that a player could be up ended.

Small minds.

It has always been possible to fair catch a kickoff. Rarely done though.

Most onside kicks dont allow time to call fair catch as low or bouncing, which would prohibit a fair catch. Havent read full rule change so maybe something there I dont know about.

He said it's essentially like a fair catch. Once the ball hits the ground after the kick, a fair catch cannot be called.

The change comes because of the "defenseless player" rule. They are saying that those players trying to field a fair catch are defenseless players and are getting blown up before the catch.
