no mention of the uproar on the team staying at a hotel

Because its a specious argument. There is no uproar over this. I have never seen it brought up on any message board. Of the 120 teams in FBS, just six do not take part in this practice.

It was a waste of time. I like Randy Peterson, and I am not saying it wasn't well written..he got some good quotes, a few from Michael Gartner that just further shows how out of touch he is with reality.

Agreed. There is no uproar over this at all. Just someone trying to make some waves or their poor attempt to get people riled up over nothing.

Is ISU 1 of the 6 then?

Maybe, but he doesn't get quoted if Bryce Miller doesn't concoct this waste of time and column space. You'd never see anything like that coming from the Gazette or QC Times.

This is correct.

As soon as the boomers die off the register will have no readers left.

I was surprised to see this mentioned on the message board here I had no idea people still read that newspaper.

sigh...it used to be the highlight of saturday and SUnday morning. My family used to sit around sat morning and read out of the paper to each other.

Sad sad..the reg doesn't even resemble the good old days...now it is fishwrap... have picked one up in years..

I like Randy too. Seems like a really good guy. I do think it's funny the amount of time he likely put into that complete non-story and the complete lack of reaction by anybody who they thought would care. He probably spent days working on a completely spurious story and I would be surprised if it was his idea. Again, it's the register's focus on stuff like this as opposed to stuff that matters or stuff people are interested in that is just killing them.

It will be interesting to see what the next 20 years holds for newspapers. I'm 29 and I don't know a single person my age who gets a newspaper.

From Iowa's standpoint it's a moot point because the Athletic Department doesn't utilize state funds.

Now Iowa State's Athletic Department still utilizes state money (general fund). Gartner could have a point with the use of funds being utilized elsewhere.

From a common sense standpoint and coaching point of view. It makes total sense to get the kids out of the dorms on Friday night because nothing good would happen. It allows the kids to get into a routine of whether it's a home game or a road game.

Also add in the fact of team unity.

But, more important just being able to get 100+ all together at the decided upon time. If they are all in the hotel, they have no reason to be late to breakfast or decided upon time. Imagine if they were staying in dorms or apartments. Some would be out the night before. Half would come late or unprepared. It is just a way to maintain the schedule.

It would go like this:

COACH: "Hey Johnson, where's Smith at".

JOHNSON: "I dunno know."

COACH: "Where the hell is Roosevelt at?"

COACH: "Were going to have to install some disciplinary actions"
