No Bubble for Iowa

If Iowa wins out and wins the first game of the BTT then they're a lock for the NCAA. They are 4-3 against top 25 teams, and they would have finished the season beating two top 25 teams and on a 6 game winning streak.

If Iowa doesn't win out or wins out but loses first game of BTT they won't be in the NCAA.

Here is a scenario for everyone. Iowa wins out and wins 2 in the BTT to get an at large bid.

Meanwhile ISU loses their last three (K-State, Missouri, and Baylor) and makes a first round exit in Big 12 tourney, and gets left out of the dance.

How big would the meltdown be?

a 10-8 conference record and a 5th place finish = at large berth,
1st game will prbably be Iowa 5th seed vs PSU 12th seed.
then a possible 2nd rd matchup with Wiscy 4th seed vs winner of 5th vs 12th seed.
18-13 overall would surpase Alfords last season of 17-14.
the BT Tourney will be for a higher seed in the dance

Win out and win one in the BTT and we have a really solid shot, win out and win two in BTT and we're in. It's simple as that. HAVE to win out though. The Illini game on Sunday is going to be huge as we haven't won there in years. Just win baby

This will also have the biggest impact on our RPI outside of a 2nd round BTT game

Iowa needs to do more than that. 19-14 just won't cut it IMO. Iowa has a long, long way to go in the RPI. Sure they have 4 wins against Top 25 teams, but they also have 4 very bad losses in Clemson, Campbell, Penn State and Nebraska. 3 of which were at home.

I would also add that 2 of those losses (Penn State and Nebraska) happen within the last 10 days. Give me those wins and a record of 17-11 right now and then maybe your scenario could work..

Next 6 days and 2 road games will tell the story. I'm as happy as anyone, but things change for Iowa when not in Carver, just not the same team. Iowa is 2-8 on the road this season.

the RPI is not the only thing they look at, and is not the defineingpoint of reference, the RPI has a part yes,, but when you look at the big picture, finishing with a 5 game winning streak, 7-2 with 4-3 record against Top 25 teams, the sweeps of Wiscy and Mnnesota are very big in the selection committees eyes, they also look at injuries,
then you have wins over Michigan, and then splits with Indiana and possibly NW,
they actually will have a # of victories over teams in the Dance that count

So if Iowa's RPI is over 100 on Selection Sunday are they in?

It's a moot question because if Iowa wins out and wins one game in the BTT our RPI will be well below 100. If we don't do that then people won't be thinking we are going to get a bid.

Also, what is the obsession with RPI? I always thought that was a relatively modest factor. If RPI was really god why even bother to have a selection committee? Why not just let the computers pick the at large teams? The committee is there because we want the selection process to be somewhat subjective which includes things such a play down the stretch.
