Detroit is a hell hole, and I love Iowa city, but even I’d take Detroit and $10-15 million in guaranteed money over being an unpaid college student.

He could just put his girl up in Ann Arbor or somewhere nice like that and stay away from the riff raff in the D. Wouldn't be a bad idea.
If you have "potential" to be drafted as a TE in the NFL, wouldn't it be the wisest move to wait until the last minute to see what other TEs declare for the draft?
I assume this information is available? Why not wait to decide?
This case seems different than the many who made up their mind to be gone from college before the season began and for the many who quit going to classes months ago. For them, there is no reason to delay.

Yea there's a line in the sand somewhere though... For that I'd 'tough' it out. Surely there's a suburb around there that isn't too bad I would think... If nothing else a neighborhood of where all the pro athletes live. They have all the major ones hockey, basketball football and baseball... Surely the heck there's a nice area not far from the downtown crap hole
I live in south Florida and have met a ton of very rich snowbird types from some of the northern suburbs or Detroit like Birmingham and Bloomfield and the towns along the lake. There a ton of money in the Detroit metro area, it’s just inside the city limits of Detroit itself which is a 3rd world country.
Makes sense. I've only been to the airport there before.
This would be a tough decision, it seems.
Issues to consider:
Is he a good student?
Does he enjoy college, on track for a marketable degree?
Does he feel like he "owes" something to the team and coaches?
Does he have inner confidence that he can play at a high level in the NFL?
Will Iowa have a chance at a great season next year? Why stay around for another 8-4, 7-5?
Will he have a huge year if he stays and move up in the draft? How will he be used? Will Kirk and staff use him to his full capacity or will it be a Outback Bowl repeat?
*This is the issue that mostly comes into play, IMHO...what kind of a player will he be, season will he have if he plays, but in the back of his mind, he is constantly concerned about being injured and ending his career in a no pay environment? If that is a big issue, his best decision would be to go for it and if he is a good/great student with an actual degree or profession then where he is drafted or how long he plays isn't a life ending decision at all. There is life outside the NFL. Two cents.

Agreed. There are still some very nice areas surrounding Detroit, for a wealthy individual to live in.

Florida is the only school with a Mackey Award winner who was convicted of murder who then committed suicide in prison. Miami is the only school with a Mackey Award winner who has been arrested for multiple counts of rape.

Detroit is turning around. There are vast swaths that are horrible, but the difference from the first time I visited in 2006 to today is startling. At least in some pockets near downtown.
The guy from Quicken loans took a ton of public money and other incentives to rehab buildings and neighborhoods in downtown Detroit, but it may have just taken the people, business, customers, and money away from other areas of the city making it a zero sum change after its all said and done. In conclusion, Detroit is a land of contrasts and Hock needs another year to avoid playing for the Lions.
