Nit or NCAA or Bust

The youth is not always a bad thing though. Young players tend to play with a lot of fire and energy, and heart. They have to prove something so they do all they can, and I think thats exactly what May, Cougill, and Payne are doing. Thats what this team needs for next year is an older player who can handle the ball and pressure that brings sparks. The exact player for that is Kaylon Williams, but lick wont sign him because he is to ignorant to do what the fans want.

Yeah, what we need more of is letting the fans dictate the direction of the basketball program. If there is one group of people I would trust less with the basketball program than the current coaches, it would be the fans.

I agree...I mean, if the Hawks have a decent pre-conference season, then stumble a bit out of the gates the first half of conference season but look to be getting better, then put it all together and finish strong and make a good run in the conference tourney...but wind up 16-14 or 17-13 with no post season...then what? It's just not as easy and cut and dry as we all want it to be...

If it plays out like that, I think that I would be happy enough to feel good about the future, and would want Lickliter to hang around for at least another season. To me, that would show the improvement I'm looking for. Sure, some will not be happy with that, but I have to believe most of us would recognize that we're headed the right direction. I don't feel that way yet, and I am basically waiting to see what next season brings, and/or if there are more transfers this year. I don't like it one bit, but this season is what it is.

It's going to come with other factors as well...like, will the 2011 class of recruits continue to build on this 2010 class, since Cole would be gone and Gatens and Tucker would be seniors...there's just so much more to it than wins and losses...heck, Iowa could hit 19 wins and make the post season, but if 2011 looks like a crappy recruiting class, where does that leave us...AGAIN?

Kirk does it all the time...that's why he got rid of KOK and that old guy who's lost touch with today's players and defensive strategies...you know, THAT guy...;)

Very good point. That's another thing that has crossed my mind recently. The way this season has gone, what is Lickliter going to be able to bring in with Tucker's scholarship, and any others that are available? Maybe we don't have to worry and Lickliter and co. can land solid talent, and we'll start getting some continuity going forward. It's got to be an even tougher sell to recruits when your team has just lost 20+ games, though, so that does concern me for the 2011 class. Again, it's a wait and see scenario. Sure wish I had a crystal ball..

At least they can sell the "instant impact" angle...when you're THIS bad noone's guaranteed of playing time or starting, so a talented kid would have to look at the situation and think "I could probably start as a freshman at Iowa"...which could make it attractive to some.

NIT is a must. And 17-18 wins will be necessary to make the NIT.

But NIT? The acronym fits perfectly.

UNI, ISU and Drake should all be wins next year. Iowa has UNI and ISU at home, and those teams will lose a lot...Drake loses Josh Young, their all time leading scorer. That game is in DSM.

So there should be three wins...Iowa should get to 10 wins in the non-conference. In league, Purdue stands to lose a boatload through early entrants to the draft..MSU is going to be a national title contender. Michigan loses Sims to graduation, and Harris probly to the pros. Can't see them being better. Hughes and Bohannon gone from Wisky. Minnesota is an uncertain train wreck right now. If PSU loses Battle (who I think could turn pro), that is a ton off a team that is still winless in the league.

Teams that will be worse next year:
Purdue* (If Moore and Johnson turn pro. If they don't, Purdue will be a house)
Michigan
Wisconsin
PSU

Teams that should be really good:
MSU
Illinois

Next tier:
Northwestern (Coble returns, as does nearly every other player)
Ohio State

Teams that should be better:
Iowa
Indiana

Who the heck knows: Minnesota

On the whole, I think the league will not be as good next year as it was this year. If Iowa can win 10 or 11 games in the non conference, and go 8-10 in league play, you are looking at 18-20 wins and the NIT.

If they do that Todd gets a year five and that has to be an NCAA tourney year.

This is assuming there will be no core defections.

PSU has no seniors - how will they be worse? Hummel, Moore, and Johnson are all Jr's and could be back also

Uhmmmm, Purdue will still be very good next year that junior class is amazing. Indiana will be better, msu will be good, illinois will be decent, and wisky has that very good soph guard who killed us last year at carver

If Purdue doesn't lose anything to the league, yes. But I could see that happening.

I've supported Lick, but I agree with next year being the year that we get to NIT as an expectation. I don't see the NCAA tourny being realistic. I think that the Big 10 won't be as good next year which should only help us. This is assuming that we don't have any key transfers. We should not be considered young next year with current team. Although I can see how some would still use that excuse. Could depend a lot on getting a replacement for Tucker's scholarship if they use it this year?

I agree that lick has to make the NIT next year to survive. Making the NIT presumbaly means you are among the top 100 teams in the land...Iowa has to be among the top 100 4 years into the lick era for him to survive, imo. Now,I will caveat that if Lick signs a top 50 recruit like Randle in November, that gives him a hair more leeway...we need to see a big uptick in recruiting by next spring for him to gain any consideration on that front.

NIT/NCAA or bust in 2011...that is the bottom line.

I think we have been inproving alot and we have alot of talent. We just need to finish the games off we should have at leas 5 or big ten wins right now. But next year will be a very good year. If we can just get the fans and students in there it will bulid alot of confedence for the guys and it will help alot.

I'm not going use the "we are young" excuse especially not when our freshmen and sophomores are playing 35 minutes a game. Some "older" teams don't even have there upperclassmen put those kind of minutes in. I'm just saying you can guarantee people will still use that excuse next season. It's going to be an escapism excuse if the team struggle again. Because when this team struggles, it isn't the coach it is the "youth."

I guess the way I look at it is that the bulk of the turnovers come from Payne, May, Gatens, Fuller. Freshman, Freshman, Sophomore, Sophomore........pretty young. If we can get the same effort out of next year's freshman class as we did out of this one, added to the core returning players, I don't think youth will be an excuse. I also think Iowa wins 18 games next year.

I don't think PSU or Purdue will lose a lot- Battle has a brother coming in as a frosh next year- can't see him abandoning the youngster. Johnson needs to gain a lot of weight before he is NBA ready, and what is Moore's position in NBA? Not a point, small off guard, may have a career but not a 1st rounder. Who does Wisky lose besides Bo, and they get Leuer back. I don't see them being worse next year. I certainly can't see them slipping below us.

With the progress of this class, the Tucker crap behind the team, and the incoming class of freshman, I think Iowa Basketball is heading in the right direction. We forget that no one expected Jake Kelly to transfer but he did. oh Freeman was a waste of a scholarship so losing him didnt hurt.

The only thing that would really help this team is SOME DAMN FAN SUPPORT!!! i was at the Iowa/Illinois game and what the Illini fans did to Carver was an absolute disgrace.. chanting "this is our house" well hell we might as well give it to them.. Iowa fans dont seem to want to go there regardless.. IBB doesnt need fair weather support. where are the real fans?

Wisky will lose Hughes and JBo...and that is it. I really think they might not drop off at all with Jordan Taylor almost better than the senior guards, and Wilson playing well as a backup guard these days, and Leuer,Nankavil,Bergrenn,Brueswitz, Evans all coming back...they could be very tough.

I think Purdue will only possibly lose Johnson or Moore, but Hummel will return..and keaton Grant and Kramer will be gone also...but they do have lewjack,Barlow,Hummel, Byrd ,Bade, among others returning...they will not be as good, but they will still be top half in the league...and ahead of Iowa.

OSU will be very good.
MSU also.
Michigan might drop.
Illini will be better.
NW better.
Minny loses Westbrook and Johnson, but return a lot of core..including Nolen,Joseph,Sampson,Iverson,Carter,Hoffarber, and Cobbs...still better than Iowa.
PSU loses no one...Battle is not NBA draft type of player and with his brother joining they will improve..

I see Michigan,Iowa and IU fighting for the bottom again...hope not but still seeing that.
