Nico Law: Linebacker?

I saw this mentioned in another thread and wanted to see what you all thought. Next year we lose all 3 linebackers. Law is supposed to be this big hitter but gets lost in coverage. He is 6'1" and 200 lbs, could he put on the 20-30 lbs to play linebacker? We do lose Tanner Miller next year and will have a need at safety but maybe Law is more suited for linebacker. What do you all think?

I actually like this idea. We've got guys like Lile, Fleming and Mabin coming up in the secondary, so Law would face quite a bit of competition for spot back there and I don't think he'd come out on top.

The problem with this is the learning curve as he has 1 year to learn one of the hardest positions in football. Iowa doesn't run your typical 1 gap defense (that most people know from HS) and the linebackers must make good reads. If the dl advances then it will be easy but if they stay where they are then it will be hard on him. I think it is worth a try especially with the spread offenses and look at kirksey and hitches who were both hybrid safety/linebackers originally but 20+ lbs in 1 yr and for only 1 yr could be tough.

if he put on 10-15 lbs he could be an effective linebacker as long as he didn't play in the middle. any more than that and you start to lose your speed and not play well, ask Basabe.

I have to admit that I was a bit surprised to see Mabin move the db. His film looked great as a wr. But that was KOK's offense and not GD's, so maybe that is the difference. But still...

Hitchens made a similar switch, didn't he? He was still learning a lot last year, but he still played pretty well.

Outside of some coach hyperbole and a cool name & jersey number, Law has been invisible for 2+ years. No reason to believe he can play a position he hasn't practiced at and is severely undersized to play at.

It's not impossible. Depends on his body type to an extent. He may not be able to put on that kind of weight in that time period where it'd be good weight for him. Some kids can some can't. I couldn't gain weight till I hit 30 and it was all bad weight after that haha.

Can we put to bed that he has coverage issues. We have played 2 games this season and I noticed a lot of blown coverages and he was not on the field.

Big time waste of a potential big time playmaker.

Which would indicate that he's even worse than those guys.
