Next year

I know many people think that the incoming freshmen are the answer to getting better next year. I know they will help, but the key to a better team next year is for the current players to get better. We need to get to the point where we have experienced junior and senior players. We need some more players to improve like Fuller did. Also we do not need any more players to leave.

All your points are right on.

1.) Player retention. Iowa cannot afford to lose KEY players. NOTE: KEY.
2.) Player improvement. We've seen it with Fuller and others under Lickliter, they just need to stick around.
3.) Quick Learners. With the lack of depth, guys like Larson and Brust need to learn the system quickly and be ready to contribute minutes right away.
4.) Experience. If no one leaves, this will be the most experienced team Lickliter will have at Iowa. That's huge.

The big thing will be keeping the KEY players, however the way Lick likes to "send" messages to his best players it would not surprise me a bit if some of the KEY players leave at the end of the year.....AGAIN

If players are leaving because they were sent a message do we really want them here anyway? These players are still so young and need to be sent a message that if they don't do it the way the coaches want it done than they will sit. It's not like it's a new practice that was started by Lick. I would rather a player get sent a message rather than letting the player make the same mistakes over and over again. Lick can't have any players leave at years end, let's hope the recruits coming in can step in and provide the depth that is needed and provide a huge spark for the program.

I honestly think that Tucker and Brommer are the only guys that might even remotely consider leaving this year. The rest are going to be here.
If Tucker or Brommer leave, opening up a scholly for a much needed perimeter playmaker, I will tip my hat to Lick, as long as he gets the right replacement. Any of the other guys leave? Then I will not be happy yet again in April.

The koolaid drinkers think the incoming frosh are going to save Iowa basketball ... all while forgetting this ... they will all be frosh ... As long as Barta allows this tragedy to continue Iowa basketball fans will be subjected to a couple more years of mediocrity ...

i don't think i have ever read or heard someone say they will be the savior of iowa basketball. i don't think anyone expects them to come in and make an impact that vaults the program, but you can expect them to make contributions to help the team. I had kool-aid for lunch and tastes way better than a glass of water from the hose.

I don't see anyone calling for an incoming frashman to be a savior. If they can provide depth on the team they will make a difference. That being said I'm sure they all can play defense and rebound. I'm sure they know how to shoot a basketball to. If any one of them can impact the team like May has then the team will be in good shape. Throw in Archie and it will be like having a second team on the bench to spell guys which will help a lot.

You must not read this board very often. There is hardly a day that goes by when the Lick-A-Holicks don't use this so called great incoming class as an excuse to keep Lick around longer. He will just keep on needing more time to turn things around forever. Four years should be enough.

4 is the perfect amount of time to make a decision, so lets keep supporting in year 3 and until the end of 4 and see where we come out.

May is unusually well-prepared to play defense in the league due to his dedication to weight-training from an early age. Most frosh do not play good enough defense initially. I am guessing that next years group will not have a defender on may's level.
Now, Larson may be up to the task ..we will see. I do think they can contribute, but just do not see them coming in and taking huge minutes from the 9 vets ahead of them....cept for maybe Larson.

If a couple of our recruits can't get playing time ahead of the 9 "vets" returning that is a bad sign, because our returning players as a whole are below-average Big 10 players. For us to be medicore next year I think Brust needs to be a better player than Tucker and Larsen must be our second or third best big. We desperately need a few guys who can score and create his own shot. Fuller is showing he may have that potential, but hopefully Brust or Larsen can show that potential as well.

Gatens, May, Fuller, Payne, and Cole are all guys I think we will be able to rely on next year. If the next class can fill in nicely we will easily have a winning season next year. Then the system will be in place and we can enjoy the benefit of continuity.

All bets are off if ANY of the above 5 leave town at the end of this season.

Even with the added talent coming in, we will still be one of the least athletic teams in the B10 and we will still lack the horses inside and we will still not have the quickness in the backcourt.
