Iowa obviously needs some scorer's but they also need some defense.

Anyone have a mock starting 5 for next year? Will Cully run the point with Cartwright moving to the 2?

Will Fran go the Juco route for a possible starter?

I'm assuming Basabe, Cartwright, and Gatens to start, just trying to get a feel on what everyone else thinks.

I agree about Archie. From all accounts he is graduating this spring. That would mean he would have to enroll in grad school to stay on the team. At that point, I would say Iowa had done enough. If he did want to go to grad school, he could see if a D2 school would pick him up for a year. If they didn't it would pretty much make it obvious that Iowa shouldn't be using a scholly on him either.

Just make more sense to bring in a player for the future.

NOBODY BETTER TRANSFER OUT! Sorry for yelling. But I @#$&ing hate how we have lost players the last decade or so. That is what has killed Hawkeye basketball lately. I think/hope McCaffery has a better understanding of his players. In that he knows how to relate and can keep everybody here. Everybody in the top 8 anyhow... One thing is already blantantly obvious, Coach Mac can relate better to his players (AND the game of basketball) than the last 2 coaches.

Picking up a JUCO would be nice, if not necessary. A Cyrus Tate, or better yet, a Reggie Evans would be perfect. A bulky defender and rebounder.
A clutch shooter is a close second. Not sure if we will have that in Ogelsby and/or White. Definitely not the former, at least not the 6-9 muscle type like Evans...

Until the last couple weeks I held out hope that one juco and one high school recruit would suffice. I am of the opinion now that we almost have to go juco for both open spots, as I don't see the additions of Oglesby and White as making a big difference right away. Both will still be freshman making a big jump and will need time to adjust / figure out what they can and can't do.

We lose the team leader (Cole) and Cartwright doesn't strike me as a vocal leader, so someone needs to step up and take the torch OR we need to bring that guy in.

I'm hopeful Cully can come back fully healthy. I'm also hopeful his outside shot is improved. Am I asking for too much?

I would love for Gatens and May to LEARN that pull up jumpers is not a four letter word.

A 6'8" to 6'10" guy with some bulk and length not afraid of contact and can rebound would be nice.

A guy that can get his own shot with a decent stroke from 3 would be nice. I'm hopeful this what Marble develops into.

I think McCabe can be a real positive. I just ask that he keeps working on his shot.

My stance on Archie is that unless we have three bonafide impact players lined up in the spring, he should stay. If we do, fine, he can go. But I have serious doubts that Iowa can get commits from 3 recruits that are all worthy. Keeping Archie means that we would have 3 open for 2012-13,a class that is strong in the state of Iowa,and giving Fran more time to cultivate relationships in that class.

I want two juco or prep school players this spring...minimum. A strong big and a playmaking combo guard ..both being athletic and quick for their positions.
One more quick athletic guard joining Bryce,Cully and Devyn might give us enough critical mass of athletes to cover for our slower players who can shoot,ie..Matt,Eric,Josh,Zach. You can win with a mix of shooters and athletes,but we have too few of the latter right now.
A Cy Tate/Reggie Evans rebounding machine is critical for this team. Does not need to necessarily be a true center,with great postup moves...we have Melsahn to handle that,but another rebounder/defender of the rim is necessary.

I really do not want to go into 2012-13 with only two schollys to give,like Meyer and Woodbury...unless that third guy we get in the spring is just too good to pass. If so, then go ahead,but would like to balance out the classes a bit,and 5 newbies next year might be a bit tough to fold in seamlessly. I think Fran's recruiting is going to get better after this year and beyond,with the new facility to show,so keep a card up the sleeve.

1. No I don't see anybody transferring out. IF, and I say IF somebody does I would expect it to be McCabe - no reason.

Starting lineup:
Cartwright - Payne
Gatens - May
Marble - White
Basabe - McCabe
Brommer - Archie

Our weakness should be pretty obvious to most:

PG is solid with an experienced backup - no problem there other than potential injury
Basabe is Big10 caliber, McCabe hustles. Barring fouls and fatigue Basabe plays 30 minutes
Marble will put on weight and White is a nice addition - depth issue and C+ to B- skills here
Now we get into the problem (as I see it).
Gatens is nice but he's not clutch. May doesn't add anything imo other than a body that can log minutes without really hurting the team. I would like to see Fran grab a JUCO slasher but I also fear that if he did then Marble and White would probably suffer minute wise more than Gatens.
C - we are just bad at this position. Brommer has certainly improved but the kid fouls too much. Archie is great about 20% of the time but looks lost the other 80%. I don't see why anyone would want him to leave unless they know of some 6'10" kid (or taller) that is just beating on Frans door to play for Iowa. I have been pleasantly surprised with his progress and hope for a miracle in the offseason.

We need an offensive minded wing and a big body C that can play D.

I'm not sure about your numbers of schollies, or I don't understand your argument. Our roster will look like this next year if Archie stays.

Freshman (4 or 5): Oglesby, White, etc.
Sophomores (4): Payne, Marble, Basabe, McCabe
Juniors (1): May
Seniors (4): Cartwright, Brommer, Gatens, and Archie

I'm a bigger fan of keeping some spread in our scholarships. For example, let Archie stay so we have 4 for 2012, 2 or 3 for 2013 (depending on JUCO) and 4 the next 2 years after that.

I don't think a 5th would help us that much next year anyway.

Adding two JUCOS makes the most sense. We can then balance the classes and theoretically get two players that can come in immediately and make an impact.

I had no idea we only have 1 Soph on the team this year. I guess Cully is the other but he will get a medical for this year.

BUT, he's a long way from home, have to think the occasionally ragged play and W-L record weigh on his mind, it can't be fun playing in a half-full arena. There's a lot of weight on his young shoulders.

I think Mel is one of the most exciting players to come to Iowa City in a long time and can help the program get some attention. Hope he feels he has a home here and that he's part of something good that will get only better.

You are right,I had the scholly numbers messed up. And yes, at least one of the spring schollys needs to be a juco. If we did go with three(archie leaving) then I would not mind two jucos(coming open in 2013,giving us three total that year),and maybe a big from prep school. If that happened, then Fran would have 4 sophs,3 true frosh, 3 jrs,3 seniors...nice class balance.

I would like a prep school big man if possible next year,as they are a year out of HS,yet have 4-5 years of eligilibity in college and can be developed.
A name I heard was another kid out of a prep school in Philly,Keith Coleman?...big guy 6'9'' 241lbs. Raw but strong and athletic. Could be someone we pair up with Brommer to man the center position next year?

What this team needs are some shooters and a bruising presence inside. That said, we have the potential shooters and the bodies to bulk up. Now will either or both show up next season??? That would require a LOT of extra shooting after summer practices, a LOT of heavy meals at the training table and a Chris Doyle style workout regiment, for some.

It would be nice to just recruit that on to the team, and it may very well happen, but the potential is there already...

You guys wanting Archie gone are silly. Archie isn't preventing us from getting a quality big man, we are preventing us from getting a quality big man. He only has one year left, and after Cole is out he's only one of two real big men we have on the roster. We are going to need both Brommer and Archie to contribute next year if we are going to improve significantly. I think realistically we can get 10 and 8 out of them and some solid low post defense.

No he'll be a medical redshirt sophomore. He already had his full freshman season. He will have his junior and senior seasons left once Bryce graduates.
