Next on the list after getting a new coach....

Start replacing administration.

First on my list is Rick Klatt. It is his job to provide the marketing and game-day experience and he has failed and failed MISERABLY. If free student tickets and $1 hot dogs are the best he can do, then just fire him and replace him with interns. Seriously.

Second on my list is Phil Haddy. What he did at the Barta press conference is indicative, in my opinion, of his inability to function in that position. There have been numerous other things as well that have rubbed me the wrong way, but there definitely needs to be a change.

Next is Per Mar. The university needs to find another organization to use, period. One incident stands out for me. 5 years ago (or however long it's been since Pierce was finally booted from the team), I took my son, who was 5 at the time, to the MSU game which was the 1st game after Pierce had been kicked off. Unfortunately, we had seats that were right behind the IZZONE student section that had invaded Carver. They, of course, wanted to stand the whole game and my son was having a hard time seeing. Luckily we had seats right next to the aisle, so he sat on the stairs, right next to the seat. Within 3 minutes a Per Mar guy comes down and says that he can't sit there. I politely tell him that my son can't see because of the MSU fans in front of us and the stairs are more than wide enough to not cause an issue with people coming and going (plus, I had him move back to his seat during timeouts, halftime, etc). He said, "I don't care if your son can see or not, get him in his seat or I'm going to ask you to leave." I ask him if he can ask the IZZONE students to sit down then, and he replies that they have every right to stand. From that day on, I've hated Per Mar.

Bottom line is that EVERYTHING related to MBB sucks and has sucked for the last 10 years or so. The mentality from the previous AD exists within the current administration (sans Barta) and they all need to be replaced with new blood that can bring new and fresh ideas to the table. In addition, there needs to be a new focus on MBB and a realization that MBB takes precedence over EVERY OTHER SPORT that utilizes Carver. NO EXCEPTIONS.

To me, the hiring of a new basketball coach represents a PERFECT opportunity to begin this process.

Rawk, I really like your stuff, but getting bitter and demanding firings of guys no one has ever heard of is rediculous.

I agree with the per mar.

Anyone know who is incharge of the security/parking lot attendants in Lames?

I went to a bball game there this winter and they were so nice and very polite which caught me off guard after years of seeing and dealing Per Mar at Iowa events.

Ghost,

I understand what you're saying about not knowing the actual people behind the scenes....but can we at least agree that SOMETHING has to change within the administration that handles these responsibilities?

Ok.. so I have to share this Per Mar story, during one of the football games this past fall there was a guy standing down on the field, sunglasses and acting like a BA (Per Mar Guy), and he had put a few people in their places to keep them off the field.

Over come the Poms squad.... he completely ignored some kids who were screwing around just off the edge of the field because he was staring down the Poms squad for a good 10 minutes. It was kind of hysterical, but wish he would have been doing his job instead of staring and thinking that he is all high and mighty and can score with those girls.

I onces witnessed a traffic guard (per mar) picking his nose and eating it as he directed traffic across the street at a basketball game.
That was years ago and I still seem him ever so often and he now goes by the name of "Picky"

Picky??

Heck, I'd just call him "Booger-Eater".

I'd just call him "The Smails Kid."

Good Lord--take it easy. What about the crew that sweeps up after the game? They missed a couple of kernels of unpopped popcorn after the PSU game.

Hey, if you're fine with the crappy job these people do, then cool......but to act like a change isn't needed is just burying your head in the sand.

Honestly. I think they should let students in free and put them all at both ends of the court behind the basket. Orange Crush wouldn't happen again that way.

A few years ago, I witnessed a Per Mar guy (or whatever outfit has the "security" people with the blue jackets) chug half a bottle of Jack at a tailgate after the game was over. He was in full uniform at the time. He proceeded to dance with some girls at the tailgate, who thought it was funny at first but then were clearly annoyed with him. He then started to get really mouthy. The guy in charge got wind of this and came over with a couple of cops to get the guy out of there "peacefully", but the guy got even more mouthy. He then got thrown to the ground, handcuffed and was whisked away by Iowa City's finest.

Yes--you are right. I am doing everything I can to avoid dealing with this problem.

Outstanding. :D

I thought Two Star was still providing security. Does this mean our group should stop chanting "Two Star, Two Star" every time we see some security guy take away someone's liquor?

Paint with a broad brush much?

There are probably several hundred people working a game, who are not getting paid much, have no authority, and they know that everyone thinks they are a joke.

I know what it is like to work like this; I have been a substitute teacher before.

My question is this: Who is going to do a better job? It is a crappy, part-time job, and you are not going to get many professionals who are going to take it very seriously. While their are undoubtedly a few tools working game security (just like their are a few tools in every line a work), there are hundreds of people working who are not looking to give anyone any trouble, and just want to get through the game without being hassled.

Ghost, I know what you're saying and agree with it....probably shouldn't paint so broadly. But I have to be honest with you...I've been to college football and basketball games in several stadiums and arenas across the country and I can tell you that, without a doubt, we have THE WORST "security" group I have ever encountered.
