Newcomers I'm excited to see play this fall

1. Jake Rudock - I think he wins the QB job and I hope he firmly holds the #1 QB position for the forseeable future.

2. Damond Powell - This kid averaged 30 yards per catch in Junior College, so as long as he takes care of his classroom obligations, I think he could be the deep threat that this team needs.

3. Cameron Wilson - He had a very solid spring and a really good spring game, and Iowa needs all the help they can get at the WR position

4. Barkley Hill - Not a lot is being said about Hill since he is coming off a major injury, but I think his running style is perfect for the zone blocking scheme that Iowa prefers.

5. Jaleel Johnson & Faith E. - These 2 redshirt freshman come in with a lot of expectations and it would be nice to see our DL get back to being a strength instead of a liability.

6. Jordan Lomax - Everything that I have read or heard has been really good about this kid's potential to be something special.

The new guys I'm most excited to see are Cody Sokol, Michael Malloy, Cameron Wilson, Jaleel Johnson and Faith Ekakitie. Michaeal Malloy was listed on the recruiting sites as 180 lbs and a 4.4 40 but I think he's up to 215 now so he's put on a lot of muscle to go with his speed. He should be a good back-up for Weisman. I think Cody Sokol is the most talented QB and he would open up this offense. Defenses will not be able to put 8 or 9 in the box against his skillset and that should open up the run game to. Cameron Wilson looks good and he caught about every pass thrown his way in the Spring game so I think he will be a starter sooner or later (hopefully sooner).

I wouldn't sleep on Riley McCarron either. Could be a case where stars don't matter. The kid caught everything thrown at him in the first scrimmage and was dinged up for the second one when Cam Wilson jumped into the scene. This offense could use a deep threat and I doubt he will be that player. However, the offense also needs some playmakers who can find space in the defense and make the freakin catch... with a strong emphasis on making the freaking catch! In the end, moving the chains is what's important. It doesn't matter to me one bit if it's a little walk-on who's stepping up in order to get it done. Every year there are receivers like him in college football who step onto the scene and make themselves known. I think CJ Fed, Hamilton, Cam Wilson, KMM, Powell, and Riley McCarron have enough ability combined to bring back a threat to the Iowa passing game.

I hope the hype around Carl Davis actually becomes less hype and more planting offensive lineman on their arses...and being a major disruption to the opposing offense. I put him in the newcomer column because a disruptive Carl Davis would be new to me. Damn, would a monster year from him go a long way.

I think someone emerges at the DE position also...Meier, McMinn, Spears, or Ott. One of those guys has to emerge as a playmaker. If so, we are going to be good, possibly very good, on defense.

When I read threads like this...its hard not to get excited or at the very least optimistic that it seems like we are recovering from injuries, attrition, and thus a talent void. There IS talent, albeit untested and inexperienced.

Now we Go.

It does seem like we have a lot of players that we are hoping emerge. If just a couple of them actually do we could be surprised this year. I hope they put in the work in the off season

I'm looking forward to seeing the freshman girls too. Oh, players? I got nothin...

I'm fired up with all that you have except Barkley. Not that I don't think he's good just that I don't see him getting a ton of touches if Weisman/Bullock and Canzeri are all healthy. Iowa doesn't tend to play the dual role unless there are injuries. So if Weisman is healthy and rolling it's 15-20 touches for him and how many more are there to be had? I agree with Rudock but he'll have to do better then ok to keep the job if Iowa stumbles out of the gate. I also am curious if Maurice Flemming will have a role. He was a really hyped up athletic kid who's switched sides of the ball a couple times now. I think he can be an athletic kid in the secondary that you can't have too many of. Also I think Jacob Hillyer will be seeing alot of balls tossed his way. I think KMM Hillyer and Powell with Bullock and Wilson sprinkled in there will be the wideouts.

I am excited to see what we have at DL, WR, and QB. WR seems wide open right now with KMM, Smith, Wilson, Cotton, Hillyer, Powell, MacCarron, Haluska, Fleming all seeming to have a shot at meaningful PT. DL is also largely a questionmark with strong possibility of upside.

The season will come down to what kind of QB we can scrounge up. From everything I have heard and seen, it seems like Sokol has a bit more ability, while Rudock may be the better leader. I hope we put whichever one will give us the best chance to win on the field. QB play can only get better from last year.

While I think all those guys will be fun to watch this year, I am most anxious to see how the defensive line performs. If they do well, Iowa has a shot in a lot more games. If they don't the overall lack of talent on the offensive side will not be able to overcome a bad defense.

Is Powell on campus? Once he finds his way to I.C. I will be excited too. Seems to be a perfect slot guy.

We have so many holes to fill, so many returning starters who are less exciting than any returning starters I can remember. I am excited for any new faces this fall.

For some reason Cotton totally slipped my mind earlier when I was rattling off WRs. He will play a ton too. I think he and Canzeri will be returning kicks. It'd sure be nice to have alittle Timmy D type excitement back there. Not sure if Canzeri can provide that or not. Cotton has shown some good instincts and hands. They both obviously have strait line speed. It kind of stinks that kickoffs are mostly touch backs. But with an O that's going to rely on the running game and play action as much as this one will field position will be huge.
