Playmaker

Jon is really stating what I said two (2) months ago....KF will open things up this year. Why? ONE reason....HOTSEAT!!!!! He knows that this is probably a make or break year for his future at head coach. If he goes 7-5 and coaches not to lose as usual, he most likely is gone.....go 7-5 but coach more like Hayden, and he may be back for 2016. Back, but "snorting" whilst reverting back to his 2010-2014 coaching not to lose style. Trust me on this....he will coach this year in full survival mode. Do NOT be fooled by what you see, and think it's in ANY way permanent....it wont be!!!

Good point Playmaker. Putting lipstick on the Ferentz Pigskin. Only when the had is forced do we see it out of some necessity (2004 also comes to mind, but there were much better parts to work with then despite not having a running game). CYA mode is in full-swing. Totally possible Iowa could be tagged as the one of the best "7-5 teams in the country" as the narrative if things shake down just right (say one those 7 wins came against Wisconsin or a Nebraska).

It should be a interesting ride this year. Could certainly be different if he does not treat the non-conference like NFL preseaon games this year. He is going to need to if he wants to be comfortable beyond this year

56 - He treats every every non-conference stretch like NFL Pre-Season and never seems to get very shook up about losses when they occur there....that alone has has me convinced for years that his ultimate goal has NEVER been a National Championship. That being the case, he has been/is making way too much $$$$$....coaches being paid Top dollar treat every game equally....even non-conference....they treat any possible loss as the one that could wreck NC hopes and feel gutted. Klunk eyes the Big Ten West title and nothing else....if he ever won that and a title game, I honestly think he would believe his work was done....even if they went 10-3 doing it and had no sniff at a NC bid.

He isn't going to open up anything more than he has, and yes we did some of that last year. He went for it all the time on 4th down, and I think that is all we are going to get. I have been saying since 2012 that we had to "open it up" because the D wasn't what it used to be. I had great hopes that he was gonna "change things up, and open them up" when he brought in Greg Davis. I had hopes that he would fire Davis and put Brian in charge of the offense so that maybe they would "open up the offense" then.

Sadly I have been extremely disappointed at every turn (even my hypothetical wouldn't' have resulted in anything new). I think all we get is going for it on 4th downs, and the rest will stay the same. Hopefully the players we have now can produce better results (IE CJ Bethard)

Aww yes. The annual fall camp opening up the offense talk. Been hearing about this opening up of the offense for years now. Have yet to actually see it happen. Don't believe I ever will as long as Kirk is in charge.

I agree. I don't think you make the announcement going into the last bowl game about the QB's then after do a 2 deep and name the back-up as the starter going forward if you don't think you have to change and loosen things up a little bit. I think the outside pressure is forcing his hand a bit which is good, IMO.

I go back to how much that donor in the booth ******** at half-time of the one game had an effect. It sure seems like the ball got rolling a little bit after that incident. Somebody with $$ sure had an influence, it seems. Too ironic of timing, IMO.

I see people always saying Kirk treats the non conference like the NFL pre season. I don't know why people say that. He treats every game he plays like a we have a 50/50 chance. He tries to keep it close so we have a chance at the end. Absolutely nothing changes in his coaching once the conference season starts. It's not like he's playing backups to get them experience or condensing the playbook to keep our conference foes guessing.

Iowa to open things up?? I'm not going to be holding my breath!!

How can anyone think or buy into that thought process? When the season is on the line and Iowa needs a must win with nothing to lose and or when The season is lost and again Iowa has absolutely nothing to lose we see the same old, same old from KF. How you teach an old dog new tricks??? Don't be over thinking this folks.

Only reason we went for it so much on 4th down last year was due to our kickers unable to make a FG at the beginning of the year. That kind of carried over through the season even though we found our kicker and he got more consistent.

Nothing will change. NOTHING. He only changes just enough things to get heat off of him, and then he's back to conservative Kirk.

Best example the NW game. We come out and hit on all cylinders. Even Jake threw the ball down the field in that game.

Then we go up to MN, and we run MW into 9 man fronts 15 times for 21 yards in the first half. All because he knew we were away from Kinnick and it didn't matter. No boos, no questions till a week later.

He needs to be gone after this year, or we will really hit rock bottom.

The only thing that will take the heat off is winning more games. I don't care what he changes or doesn't, so long as we win more games. Win less than 8, the heat will stay just as hot, maybe get hotter. Win less than 7 games...it'll be a scorcher, I could see him leaving either by choice or not. Regardless, I'd like to see some kind of transition or succession plan in place, starting this year, even if it was behind the scenes.

Only 7 wins with their schedule would be criminal, and should definitely result in Klutz being fired.

7 will be very dissappointing, but I don't believe it gets KF fired. 6 or fewer might, and should, given the schedule. 7 wins and another loss to a terrible isu or fbs team, or losing a game that we have a 10+ point lead in the 4th... will be just as bad as 6 wins, imo.

"How" and to "who" we lose to will play a factor as well.

8 wins is the barometer. Imo.

Wish he would but not likely. He doesn't really understand college football anymore. The tweets coming out saying alot of throws to the flats cements that nothing will change this year. Those plays work when you have a deep threat but every team loads the box to stop our running game or those stupid throws.

You can ***** and moan about Davis all you want, but I'll never understand why people think Brian would be able to run it any better. His experience at quarterback? Decades spent calling plays in a variety of offensive sets?

In the recent podcast Deace came off as a curmudgeon complaining about everything Iowa and BTN.

Jon Miller was exactly right that the BTN has a built in advantage with TV set numbers and distribution contracts. So they have a fairly lame bunch of announcers and slim looking tv sets and stages.

Unless you know their financials I wouldnt get too hard on the BTN.

I will be very disappointed this year if they do not have CJB throwing it deep 5-7 times a game, spreading it out and also hammering it straight at the defense.

Good lord people. Opening it up? Its was funny to talk about 5 years ago.

Kirk doesn't know how to do things a different way.

Even when he tries to do something different he really doesn't believe in it. Its unnatural to him, he has no faith in it and I believe he basically dislikes it. He constantly goes out of his way to talk about how football isn't really different than it was 30 years ago.

Im sure Iowa will take more chances this year but it won't be in any kind of a way that makes sense or works.

As far as opening up the offense....I'm not convinced, especially when Kirk recently said this about throwing the ball downfield: "Why on earth would anybody do that?"

However, I *do* believe there will be more passes downfield this year because of CJ. He is simply going to throw more long balls than Jake did.

I agree with the OP that Kirk is coaching this season as if his job is on the line.

Guys- so what if we do "open it up"? If you don't have the talent, opening it up isn't going to do anything. So what if the Cincinnati Bengals open it up. Open it up as much as you want, not enough firepower.
