Just saw Morehouse retweet an Illini beat writer saying he's hearing Lovie Smith will be the next coach

yeah right, isnt lovie the head coach at tampa bay? or did I miss him getting fired.

And I have to say this is a weird move Illinois as not only who are they going to get but I thought cubit got a lot out of his team.

Whether it turns out to be Lovie or someone else, you can bet your life that the new AD had someone sewed up before he ever pulled the trigger on Cubit.

i was thinking about recruiting when i said that. as far as i know, he's never coached at the college level. for whatever reason, illinois has proven to be a tough place to succeed.

Lovie has coached a lot as an assistant in college. Tulsa (83-86), Wisconsin (87), Arizona State (88-91), and Kentucky (92) as a linebackers coach. Tennessee (93-94) and Ohio State (95) as a defensive backs coach. It will be interesting to see how it translates after being in the NFL since 1996.

What is it with Illinois athletics. Just saw the interview with the new AD on the BTN. He looks like another tool.

What gives at that place?

4th head FB coach gone since 2011
Didn't tell the players beforehand. They found out by refreshing Twitter.
Fired his son to boot.
All on his first day on the job.

While the two year contract was stupid, Whitman showed some cojones I guess.

Illinois and Rutgers are head-to-head as being the two biggest B1G messes right now
.

"Capt. Bart Mancuso: Conn, aye. All right, Ryan, we just unzipped our fly."

So did neophyte Josh apparently.

Lovie was a bad NFL coach, hope he continues his losing football ways at Illinois.

Huh? He took the Bears to the Super Bowl with Rex Grossman as QB. He got ran out of Chicago after posting a 10-6 record. The Bears would kill for that now. He lost his job in Tampa because of Bucs management fear of losing then OC now head coach to another team. Apparently, they did not want to lose the relationship between Koetter and Winston. We will see how that works out for them.

I have no idea if Lovie Smith will work out at Illinois or not. Lovie Smith has that same quiet dignity that Tony Dungy has, that Kirk Ferentz has. You will never see Lovie Smith making a buffoon of himself. Thinking about it, he is exactly what Illinois needs right now. A guy who will be able to teach and lead and do it the "right" way. He will probably be their best coach in the last 5 that they have had.

We have always known Illinois had that sleeping giant potential. This would be an outstanding hire for them.
