New Expectations

I was pretty realistic in my expectations, figured an NCAA tourney berth would be enough to label this year a success. But then I read some of Jon's latest stuff...as well as the Pearl tweets...and etc...I've upped my threshold...I think an elite eight appearance would be considered a "good" year, but Sweet 16 for sure. I have been convinced this team has enough talent they SHOULD make a deep run in the NCAA tournament come March.

What if we lose in the first round?? Fire Fran?

I think it is reasonable to expect this group to make the tourney. Beyond that, I think Iowa can make it as far as the second weekend, but I don't know if it is reasonable to make that the expectation.

SonofaSailor, if I have learned anything reading Jon's stuff over the years it is to not get excited based on what he believes/thinks teams will do. Plus Pearl is a sleazy ball but beyond that he has a connection to the program so he is hopefully just like the rest of us. I don't let other people's opinions or expectations affect mine, because if you do, more often than not you will be disappointed.

No you don't fire someone who takes you to the NCAA tournament (we went down that road with Mr. Davis)...but...I'd be pretty disappointed I think.

Baby steps is okay with this program...NCAA tournament is another step...if they get to the Sweet 16 that is just a bonus. If they win one game it would be another step one the reclamation project.

This team better learn how to shoot and how to defend against the outside shot or by February we're going to be looking forward to the start of football.

Once you get to the NCAA tournament, it's pretty much a crap shoot for all 4+ seeds in the first round. You could play the NCAA tournament over 10 times and you'd end up having so many different 4+ seeds making the Sweet 16 at least one time. Rarely, would you have a 4+ seed make the sweet 16 over half of the time. That's what makes it a crap shoot.

If Fran gets us to the NCAA tournament even 50% of the time for his remaining years then I wouldn't want him fired. Even if we lost in the first round every single time.

This is concerning. And it's not like it will be much different from this either. It's who they are. A team lacking shooters. Unless they get to the FT 50x, this crap won't cut it. It's very frustrating.

I didn't get to watch the game..but after reading the majority of the posts expecting Iowa to shoot 70% from 3 and win by 70 today, I will stay away from here until regular season. I forgot that we are supposed to look like an Elite Eight team or better during our first exhibition game....we scored 87 points and won by 22. Who cares until we play Xavier

Well I'm not sure what you expected, but this team isn't going to shoot much better than 32% from 3pt range (which is an improvement from last year). Plus if you are frustrated by one exhibition, you might as well pack it in for the rest of the year, as your head is gonna explode when we drop a game we shouldn't (which is gonna happen)

Assuming the team "can't shoot" or "defend against the outside shot" and deciding "who they are" based on an exhibition game is ridiculous.

I expect they will shoot better from the three throughout the season than they did in their exhibition game.

To everyone already questioning this team: go away please.

It is an exhibition, not one time when I watched that game, I didn't see Marble even look like he was going to remotely force anything. He was simply a facilitator, I didn't watch the whole thing, but a good portion of it.

Is the football season that terrible that you have to bring the ignorance over to this board.

Temper your expectations, the rotation is by no means set and the two new guys looked a little out of sorts, but Iowa still have some very good players. I liked what I saw out of Woodbury today, I saw no hesitation when he had the ball and he is still one of the best passers on the team.

The team I saw today....well I think making the NCAAs would be a wonderful thing to shoot for. They did not look like Big Ten Title Contenders today (darkhorse maybe). However, it is very, very early to make heads or tails of things. But, Iowa is going to have to do much better than 2-18 behind the arc. Teams are going to zone Iowa until Iowa can prove they can hit the outside shot with regularity.

Yeah, you're right. Today's performance is as good as the team is going to get. We should all get our panties in a bunch and bemoan our fate as Hawkeye fans.

I think the problem we're having is that between the extra time in the NIT last year, the europe trip and the fact that we didn't really lose anyone people were expecting a better performance. It's not like this team has never played together...THAT's why we're worried. Because what I saw reminded me of last year so much it hurts. Team that can't shoot from outside, relies on free-throw shooting to stay in it and plays salty defense. Except even the defense was suspect.
