New Commit!

Something tells me he will be the perfect size for a RB. Don't be surprised if he come in at 200.

I kinda like some of the smaller backs with some speed. They have been doing well at some schools.

That has little bearing on where the Iowa coaches had been recruiting him at. For instance, for a long time most recruiting web-services were listing Hounshell at DE. However, schools like Iowa and Florida were expressly recruiting him at OT. Only now is the rivals site listing him as an OL recruit.

Similarly, Derby was listed as a ATH by many of the websites ... and yet the Iowa coaches recruited him at QB.

And you, personally, have no idea for what position they were recruiting him. This is what we have to go on and it is certainly not clear that he was recruited for the RB position.

I do know that he was expressly recruited at the RB spot. In nearly every longer article written about him, he often mentions how Iowa was one of the few programs that was expressly recruiting him at RB. Furthermore, folks on the boards here who have connections to Wisconsin high school football (and/or the Kenosha area) have been explicit about how Gordon was explicitly recruited at RB.

If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and even tells you its a duck ... I think its safe to say that you're dealing with a duck (albeit a talking one).

Aw yes...your old "inside information" schtick.

It's not really 'inside information' when he is quoted in articles saying he is being recruited to play running back at Iowa.

The important thing is that he has the potential to be a really dynamic player, which is always an asset regardless of what position he plays.

We've had this sort of discussion plenty of times before. How 'bout we just drop it?

Others hear seem to understand precisely what I was getting at ... so I will not belabor it any further.

I've enjoyed your contributions here about Tanner Miller. I'm very excited about the young man and I agree with your assertions that Tanner has the potential to be among the group of elite safeties that have been produced at Iowa.

Nice, Homer!!

ps - the absence of this kind of eloquence and knowledge is palpable in C-U as the season begins!

As a matter of habit, I still kinda have my fingers on the pulse of the Illini. I'm curious how their safety situation will pan out ... especially if Aiken gets hammered for the stuff he was doing with Lendell Buckner.

I've already posited that I think that the Illini could be pretty darn decent in 2011 ... however, 2010 is a whole different story. When you also consider about the work they have to do on the OL and the fact that Brent couldn't make the grade ... they have A LOT of work to do.

I'm sure that the new coordinators provide the squad with marked improvements ... especially with Zook now keeping a "hands-off" approach ... he'll do anything to keep his job now.

However, the problem for the Illini is that they have a tough enough schedule early on AND they're a young enough squad ... they simply might not have the "toughness" to persevere after a tough start.

Of course, if Loren Tate's assumption is correct ... Zook might be working with 2 years to right the ship here. Thus, the question might be whether or not the 2010 squad does well ... but whether or not they do well enough.

I've always been much higher on Gordon than on Coe. I love his speed and agility but what tops it for me is his runner's instinct. If you watch his game footage, he makes guys miss and doesn't drop much speed at all. There's more than one instance where he stiffarms a tackler behind him and creates a yard or more of separation. In his camp footage, he's an aggressive blocker and routinely burns linebackers on his passing routes.

As was mentioned on Hawkeye Report, when Shonn Greene was recruited he was listed as 5-11, 190. That's one inch shorter and 5 lbs heavier than Gordon. He's got a wide frame and is very lean right now. With the Doyle system I don't see any problem with him reaching 205-210 by the time he's on the field. He just turned 17 in April, he has a lot of growing to do. We got a real prize with Melvin Gordon. I can't wait to see what we do with him.

I really like BOTH Gordon AND Coe. They are just goes who have different running styles. Both run strong ... but still with different styles. Gordon is a bit more of a versatile guy ... whereas Coe is a bit more of a bruiser. There is definitely room on the Iowa squad for BOTH styles.

Oh absolutely. If we can get both I'll be ecstatic. But if I had to choose one or the other, it's always been Gordon. Coe, IMO, runs too upright and doesn't have all that much lateral motion. Things that can be fixed under Erb but problems I don't ses as much of from Gordon.

Agreed with your assessment of upright runners......

And to think we could've made it to the big time if we'd have only known....

Sincerely yours....

I'm not saying that no upright runner has ever been good in college or the pros, but if given the choice between an upright bruiser or a slippery speed back who keeps his pad level low, I take the low pads every time. Not only does upright running lead to more fumbles, it can also lead to leg and shoulder injuries.
