Come in and evaluate the players and whoever either A)doesn't have the skill set for the new coach's system or B) doesn't really have a desire to be a Hawkeye, then just cut them loose. Same with the recruits. I don't care if we have to fill in the holes with walk-ons from Sigourney.....let's just get to the point where we stop losing players so we have a foundation from day 1 to build from.

Great post, I agree with you. The first year or two will probably be rough but it's time for a fresh start. This will not be an overnight project. I think a hire that gets the fan base excited is a must.

One difference is that most of our players are young,which cuts two ways:

1. Having predominately a soph,frosh team, that means a new coach might see more growth potential in this roster than Lick probably had in the roster he inherited.

2. On the other hand, as frosh,sophmores,most of Iowas roster could transfer,redshirt,and not lose a year of eligibility.

So, new coach has to carefully assess the talent,and have his own recruiting gameplan laid out so he knows if it is better to stick with guys he cannot replace anyway right now, or has some guys he can tap right away and change the mix.

Guys that I think can work with any system or coach:
Gatens,Fuller,Payne,May and Cole is not leaving anyway.
Larson is important to retain.
Marble is already on board and has potential to be good in any system.
If Brust and McCabe want to be at Iowa...honor their LOI's.
Archie...cannot blow him off,that would be wrong.
That leaves Cougill and Brommer and one open scholly.
Lets see what shakes out.
If a new guy had even two schollys he could immediately fill with quick perimeter guys, I think it could make a big diff with this team next year.

The Indiana method of rebuilding a program? No thanks. IU was worse than we were this season. If you are looking for a deeper basement, then pogroms are the way to do it.

the method you advocated earlier in this thread (clean house completely) is what Crean walked into. Due to Sampson, he had exactly ONE returning scholarship player when he took over. Indiana was a terrible, abysmal team in Crean's first season (to be expected) with their only conference win over Iowa. This year Indiana was competitive until Maurice Creek got hurt for the year. They will be better next year than they were this year.

In Iowa's case, there is no sense to not have Gatens/May/Fuller/Payne on the team if they want to stay. As others have said, if there is a player or two who wants to leave, so be it.

As to the assistants, I agree with you.

As to the secretary, I disagree with you.

As to the players... we need to keep as many able bodies (and semi-able bodies) on the team for next year, so I disagree with you there.

Some people are too caught up in this "system" thing. A good basketball player will be good in almost any system. A good player may not like a certain style of play but he is still a good player. Having said that, how many good players would not like an up tempo style of play? Almost all pick-up basketball games are up tempo whether it's adult rec leagues or middle school open gym.

On the other board some people are mentioning a coach from Kansas. I would say it is fairly easy recruiting big-time talent to Kansas. Can that same asst. coach come to Iowa and recruit those same type of players? I would question that? Perhaps, Perhaps not...

Same with Duke or Ohio St.

Recruiting for Ohio St football probably isn't so hard. Bring him to Iowa, can he recruit quite as easily? Those are pretty salient points....

Barta is firing lick because he couldn't keep kids here. I think it is plain and simple that any coach he hires, Barta is going to make it clear that they want to retain as many players as possible. Cleaning House is not an option. Lick built a foundation, the new coach will need to build off this foundation and put a playmaker or two in place.

I would guess that Barta wants a Blue Collar guy that has experience and is familiar with Iowa. That is just a guess on my part.

You're right NMH...all those things are true. But having coached at Kansas, UNC, Duke or tOSU allows you to "shop" in their stores. You have the AAU connections, you know the high school coaches etc.... It certainly helps.
