New coach Foster to coach RB's

I like this move, mainly because it gets Brian Ferentz back to something more in his wheelhouse. Disregarding what you think of him as an OC, his time with the Patriots showed his ability to coach TEs, and with the crop of them we have right now, that could be huge for this offense.

Samford's run-game statistics last fall, under Foster's direction, had the Bulldogs averaging only 79.5 yards per game (114th out of 123 FCS schools) and 2.84 yards pc.

Those numbers suggest this move was not about Foster being expected to improve the run game.

If you have to disregard him as an OC.....

I had that in mind as well, but if we're honest with ourselves, Iowa's run game is usually never dictated by who's toting the rock, but by the OL in front of them. If we can plug a FB in at the HB spot and have a serviceable run game, I'm not especially worried about Foster's lack of success there. I think he was more of a recruiting-based hire anyways.

This guy is as qualified to coach a run-oriented Big 10 program as Brian was to be an offensive coordinator at a Big 10 program. Kirk doesn't hire the best and brightest available, he hires "yes" men who will not get in his way.

It's not quite all that as easy. The running back doesn't need to be the fastest to succeed in Iowa's system, but they do have to know how to read blocks, and know not only where the defenders are but where they will be. Yards after contact also helps a great deal.

Oh I agree. I was saying that our system allows average or out of position RB's to perform above average, and good one's to excel. Then again, we've been pretty lucky with talent at RB in recent years.

I think he was hired more for his recruiting abilities in the south. Just my opinion but growing up there maybe he has some good pipe lines.

I bet his primary focus is to find and land a 6'0 + 220Lb's + kid from the south that runs a 4.5 or under. There are quite a few each year. I think Iowa wants one.

I think Foster has a connection with Seth Wallace. They were both on the coaching staff at Valdosta State in Georgia.

OC also coaching TEs . . . guess what the focus is going to beeeeeeeeee?

i wonder how many people hire lawyers to tell them 'no'

I agree with this. Let's hope this pans out. One home run from the south, at a key position of need, each season could really make a big difference. Folks, I think Iowa needs to pull out all of the stoppers when it comes to recruiting; we are teetering on the brink of being behind WUs & kNU (yeah, I think Frost will get it done) and having to fend off jNW, if we're not careful. The B1G now is all about winning your division and if you can't, then you're going to be irrelevant.
