New assistant ideas

Iowa has a few different directions it could go in adding a 10th assistant.

One writer proposed that the ideal way to handle this would be to hire a RB coach, and change Brian's responsibilities to OC and TE coach. That move makes sense considering that TEs were Brian's forte with the Patriots.

Hiring a good charismatic RB coach that is a talented recruiter would be a no-brainer, IMO.

Whichever way Kirk goes, I sincerely hope he emphasizes recruiting ability as a primary criteria. It also wouldn't hurt to find someone with established ties to the St. Louis metro area given it's population density and close proximity to IC. We already have that to an extent with Chicago and Indianapolis.

I sure wouldn’t mess with TE coaching. It was one of the few units that performed this year. Ain’t broke; don’t fix.

Whatever they do it has to do something to improve recruiting.

Iowa could use a new OL coach. I don't believe the guy they brought in from NDSU last year was a good fit at OL. Maybe he can take over RB and special teams, then have a new guy take over OL.

Yup, if things were done logically, he would have been the new OC instead of Brian. Makes you wonder if there is some secret deal in place that if Brian is promoted to head coach, then Polasek will be promoted to OC at Iowa.
The shitty thing is brian shouldn't have gotten the job over polasek

Remember, KF has the final say (and many times only say) in all facets of Iowa football.

I think with the new early signing period and just the amount of kids (and Tape) to look at I think it should be spent on a recruiting type position where they can spend the majority of their time just finding kids and getting good information. In my opinion it is a position that could never hurt and depending on personality and pedigree could be someone to go and perform visits/scouting. There are really a few different angles to go at it and I don't think it is always possible to get a great scout and a great personality that is good in a living room, either direction is fine by me. To me there is only one answer and that is RECRUITING!!

Bobby Kennedy (ex-WR coach) just threw up a new profile pic on twitter. Looks like at Stanford now as WR coach. Not bad.

I thought it was already determined that the new QC guy would fill a coaching position, no?
I don't believe so, no. Kirk indicated that a new coach will be named but there has been no determination in terms of who or where, but he did mention recruiting ability as something they are looking at.

'Yes men' coaches can easily go to any staff. Problems with 'yes men' coaches occur if the HC doesn't allow differing or independent thinking while the HC's thinking is convoluted...Sometimes the emperor needs to be told he has no clothes and when the emperor constantly walks around without clothes, it's time to get a new one...emperor.

Whoah. Never would have expected that. He always looked like more of an Eastern Mississippi Community College type of guy.

I could coach the 4 and 5 star guys. "Run fast, make some moves, catch the ball, run toward end zone".

He had just posted he was WR coach at SMU back in Nov/Dec timeframe and then evidently this better offer came along. Maybe that also had to do with a coaching change at SMU. Hadn't looked but I know that head coach was being mentioned for other jobs. Short lived career at SMU anyway.
