Need more backscreens and backcuts (addendum to Motion Offense)

The hawks got off to great starts on offense in the first 10-15 minutes of these last two games. The 2nd half against IU was good. But when they start just dribbling around we all know what happens.

I hope Fran starts to get them to use more back screens and backdoor cuts. Teams are overplaying our wings and the high post screens so there is room to go backdoor or especially backscreen the wing defender.

What other changes are needed (besides some better 3 pt shooting) to keep this offense humming for most of 40 minutes.

We dont have alot of guys who can go one on one in the b1g.

I concur. Flex cuts on the baseline, double and triple staggered screens to get some open looks from the outside, some set shot lob plays ala Dr.Tom.

The half-court offense needs more wrinkles. We are very easy to defend dribbling the ball around with no purpose.

I don't think they need the shot lobs, but the rest of this is spot on. For a motion offense, there's not all that much motion at times.

I think part of it is just inexperience. They did those things pretty well last year, especially down the stretch. We had to do it in order to help get Gatens more good looks when teams started really keying on him.

Some really great point... observations... and analysis.

Guess what? Fran and staff ( a multi-millionare dollar staff at that) has forgot about that and then remembered it again.

The short comings so far is so much Freshman and stupid Sophomore mistakes.. otherwise 2-1 to start in the Big Ten. If Iowa had an NBA lottery pick, athletic, slasher scorer at will player on the team they could even have a better record and upside.

Until next year and the growth over the coming year... who knows?

In any event...

IOWA is BACK
