Nebraska-Iowa … call it what you want - Omaha.com

Right now, it is aptly described as a "trophy game". We have to win a few before it is a "rivalry game".

You sound like a Clown fan.

I hear more about 1995 from Hawk fans than I do Husker fans. You're fixated on the 90's more than we are.

Incorrect, I live in Omaha. You get into any argument/discussion with a Husker fan it takes about 10 minutes for "How many National Championships do you have" to come out. They live in the past. They base their expectations and image of the team based upon the mid 90's. Why else would they be calling for a coach's head who wins 9 games a year?

As a lifelong Iowa fan and Nebraska resident I do not see it being a rivalry until we can beat them.

I'd have to sit in on that conversation to comment specifically, but from my experiences, whenever a fan of another team (in this instance, Iowa) points out how irrelevant NU has been since 2001 compared to their team, well, what else can you say? "Yep, we've played in a few conference championship games and have fallen short each time, while your team has tied for a couple of B1G championships and played in a couple of BCS bowl games. But hey, we've won about the same amount of games over that time."

Blah.

If you talk trash, expect to be trash-talked.

You make a good point and I'm really torn about this. I listened to Jason Peter on the radio yesterday and he is very passionate (obviously) about the program. He really fired me up, said that we should be about excellence, not what we are seeing now. I want that.

But the reality is things have changed so much in the 15+ years its been since he played college ball. I HOPE and WISH we could be that good again, but reality tells me that it is going to be almost impossible to do so.

If you want to get a read on what we really think and feel, I'd say pay more attention to what is said on message boards and radio shows (I almost puked when I wrote that). The 90s are rarely brought up by fans, most of us only want a team that plays at a high level and is nationally relevant.

As has been said, Trophy game, nothing else until we beat them a few times. And many Nebraskans think trophy games are weird. They don't understand the B1G culture yet with all the trophies. For many, their only rival is Oklahoma. Problem is, even when Nebraska and Oklahoma played on Black Friday every year, Oklahoma didn't consider Nebraska their rival. It was Texas.

Colorado wanted to be Nebraska's rival, but Nebraska looked down on them. Nebraska wanted OU to be a rivalry, but OU looked down on Nebraskans. So, as many have said, until you slap them up side the head and get their attention, it will remain a trophy game. We still haven't truly welcomed them to the B1G ... maybe Friday we can do it. : )

Agree with the previous posters, it's a great trophy game and probably should be considering the amount of Iowa and Nebraska fans in the Omaha and Iowa area.

It doesn't yet feel like when we play Wisconsin.

I'm not even sure Iowa can handle another rival, I mean we have ISU that always plays up when playing us and Minnesota and Wisconsin. Not to mention Illinois and NW fans hate Iowa. Played very competitive games with Mich St and Penn St in the past, which I'm sure the players remember well. Then we have our protected rival in Purdue, which is the best one.

That's 7 teams that always play tough against Iowa, not including Nebraska.

There's not the history yet, but since it's a border state I can promise you that it's a huge game for Iowa fans who live close to Nebraska and have to listen to them blow hot air all year. Luckily I'm nowhere near Nebraska but still know a lot of their delusional fans so it's certainly a bigger game than average for me.

I agree with much of what you say, except that I'm not so sure that Bo is a dead man walking. For now, he certainly is in pergatory from everything I have heard. I think if we win Friday, he is ok, but if we lose it makes his seat quite a bit hotter. I would also not agree that kids are afraid of getting yelled at if the screw up, I think they are more afraid of getting pulled and never seeing the field again if they make mistakes. Bo has a very odd way of (mis) managing his roster.

Also, I think that our kids are motivated, if for anything, to save Bo's job. They hear the rumblings, and contrary to what some think, they do love playing for Bo. That being said, I'm not chalking this up as a W.

Hmmm ... :)

Who really cares if they want to look at the Hawks as a rivalry. They just think because of their history and tradition that they're in elite of college football and were just want-a-be's. Just win games.
