Nebraska was a sub .500 team before Devaney got there in 1962. I think they were like a .35 team from 1945-1961. That's like on par with Iowa State. Most, if not all, of Nebraska's success can be attributed to Devaney and Osborne and that's it. It has almost nothing to do with fan expectations.

I'll tell ya something sick. IIRC Playboy's legendary sportwriter Anson Mount predicted Iowa to win the national title in 1962. That's how much respect Iowa had. With Iowa's fall from grace Nebraska picked up the baton and ran with it. Ohhhh, what might have been. Evy coaching thru to 1978. Then Hayden from 79-98. Then KF from 99-present. My friend THAT'S a dynasty!

A lot of Husker fans actually believe their high expectations are why they achieved 5 national titles. Sure it had nothing to do with having Osborne and Devaney, two legendary coaches over a 40 year period <sarcasm>. Nebraska was on par with Iowa State before Devaney got there.

I could be mistaken. I know he was there before Devaney but am not sure if it was right before or one coach in between the two, but Bump Elliott's brother, Pete, was the head coach at Nebraska when they weren't any good.

Also remember Osborne behind that grandfatherly persona had one of the shadiest programs in the country. Nebraska in the 80's and 90's was the Wild West. One needs to look no further than Lawrence Phillips. They should have been put on probation just for his antics.

Nebraska had many built in advantages..namely the old BIG8.. Beat up on the sisters of the poor.Play OKIe and hopefully win..Get up for one or two other games in the season. I'm too lazy to look,but did all of the championships occur during the mythical titile era?

Their expectations need to get in line with reality.

You know, I think UM and OSU had the same thing as OU and Neb. Out west it was USC and UCLA. A lot more parity these days.
