NDSU-Iowa Preview & Prediction: Mutual Respect in the Air

Yes, typically it's not a good sign having a Ferentz Iowa team's QB going over 300 yrds as that would indicate an imbalance in the offense or Iowa having to catch up. But, in your article it stated that one weakness of the Bison team is that they have given up some passing yards or some long pass plays. IF they can stop Iowa's running game to an extent, I could see CJ trying to exploit their pass D issues. That is the only reason I'm saying he could maybe do it this particular game.

At least according to Massey, NDSU is better than any team on the remaining schedule except Wisconsin, Michigan, and Nebraska. (Yes, I know the season is young, etc.)

Rob, have you heard any more on Wadley and Mitchell? Seems strange. If they are injured it certainly didn't happen in the game saturday. Wadley was walking around fine after his day was over, and Mitchell was still the punt returner on the last punt late in the game. He fair caught it, so he obviously didn't get hurt on his last play.

I was following you. Just more commenting on CJB and Banks not having a 300-yard game.

Would be a good trivia question - how many times have CJB and BB thrown for 300? But we gave away the answer. :)

I do think we can throw in these guys.

Haven't heard anything more. KF's radio show is tonight so perhaps we'll learn more.

Someone call in and ask. He knows my voice. :)

I think Iowa could put up big points again this week. Their secondary can be exploited and their DE's and OLBs are small. Iowa should be able to attack the edges with Wadley and Daniels.

There haven't been very times during Ferentz's tenure that the QB has thrown over 300. That could be a trivia question in itself. How many 300 yrd games have happened during Ferentz's tenure at Iowa? Might be under 3.

Tate must have had a bunch when the Hawks were sans running game. Somebody go look that up for me.

You would think but I don't think he did. I usually look to see if the QB hit 300 yrd when looking at stats after games and I don't recall too many at all for Iowa. They are usually in the 230 to 270 range, it seems.

Didn't JVB have 2 or 3 in 2011? Pittsburgh, Northwestern and I thought he put up a big number against someone else. I know it is easy to look up I am just too lazy to do it.:)

Vandenberg threw for 399 against Pitt in '11. That's the most in the KF Era.

Can you guess who threw for the second most under KF? I looked it up. Don't cheat. :)

McCann against PSU in 2000? McCann threw a 1000 bubble screens to Kasper that year.

Stanzi vs. Indiana in 2009 had to be close to 300 of not more. He had 2 90ish yard touchdown passes. That's 180 yards on just 2 plays.

Back to the preview, I don't see NDSU getting much of a pass rush with their front 4 against Iowa, They will need to blitz. I really think our OL will dominate the LOS, but their LB's read and react really well though. They look really well coached. The LB's don't look great in zone coverage though, and I expect to see a lot of zone coverage as I don't think they have the 'athletes' to man up in the secondary. They have sort of a 4-2-5 look as they have a 'hi-bred' type LB/safety who they move around, but then again that was against Eastern Washington and their spread. May see a more 'traditional' 4-3 look against Iowa. Nobody on D really 'jumps out' at you as a big play maker, but they look really well coached and don't make a lot of 'mistakes'......Iowa will need to wear them down and find holes in the zone, as there won't be a lot of shots down the field with them sitting in zone.

On offense, they look very 'average' and Eastern Washington looked horrible on Defense (lots of 'gambling', and worst tackling I've seen since Iowa played Tennessee :) ). Their skill people are small and 'shifty'. They love to run a lot of 'power' plays, pulling the guard around the center and leading with the guard and FB. I don't think they have the 'horses' to be too successful doing that against our front. It will be interesting to see how PP defends their 'Delta' formation. They also run the 'jet' and 'jet' option occasionally which we have struggled against at times in the past. If I remember right, PP made slight adjustments in alignment and how they 'attack' it last year and it was an improvement. I just don't see them scoring a lot of points. Maybe a few FG's and MAYBE a TD?

So after quickly watching their replay from last week, I think Iowa will continue their streak of scoring in the 40's at home (and it could be more if Iowa picks up a special teams or defensive score...they're about due) and I can't see NDSU scoring more than 13 points (and I think I'm being generous), so I'm going to say 45 -13 Iowa......

Oh, and NDSU seems to have a penchant for recruiting kids named Zack as they have at least a half dozen of them and actually have 2 Zack Johnsons :)
