NCAA Should Change Hiring Rule

Notre Dame was allowed to hire Brian Kelly away from Cincinnati before Cincy’s bowl game. I consider that to be during the season, although the regular season was technically over. The NCAA should change that rule. I understand why Notre Dame did what they did. They did it to keep their recruiting intact. Kelly built the Cincy program from the ground up, and in a perfect world, he should have been able to coach his team in the bowl game.
Could you imagine the NFL allowing one of its teams to hire away the head coach of another playoff team- during the playoffs? I couldn’t.

Kelly had the choice to stay and coach in the bowl, and he didn't want to. Florida DC Charlie Strong was hired as coach of Louisville, but he is staying to coach (against Cincy, oddly enough) Florida in the Sugar Bowl.

Interesting point of view I heard on a chicago radio station before the hiring actually took place... they said if they were ND they would ask Kelly if he was going to coach his team in the bowl game and if he said No, they should have some serious doubts about hiring him... due to the lack of commitment to his current team.

Urban Meyer coached his final game at Utah after he was hired at Florida... he flat out told them I want to coach my team!! I admire him for that... I despise Florida, but he is a loyal coach and was respectful that Utah team.

Kelly had the choice to coach. The fact he choose not too, says a lot. He walked away from his 12-0 team. How can you do that?? The players reaction said it all.

Besides, The Participation Season is not controlled by the NCAA like March Madness or CWS. They just give thumbs up to cities/bowls who want to throw money at the NCAA and schools that are average and >avg.

You make a great point. I heard Kelly on the Dan Patrick Show, and he said that if Cincy was playing for the title, he would have stayed, even if it could have cost him the chance to have his dream job. The NCAA rules, or lack thereof, that allow this type of hiring before the bowls are completed, seem to be a lot less regulated than the pros. But someone else in this thread made a good point about the bowls being outside of the realm of NCAA rules.
