State College, PA - Penn State Football: NCAA President Emmert Doesn?t Rule Out Death Penalty in PBS Interview

"I've never seen anything as egregious as this in terms of just overall conduct and behavior inside a university and hope never to see it again," Emmert said. "What the appropriate penalties are, if there are determinations of violations, we'll have to decide.

"We'll hold in abeyance all of those decisions until we've actually decided what we want to do with the actual charges should there be any. And I don't want to take anything off the table."

"Well, it was more than a football scandal, much more than a football scandal. It was that but much more. And we'll have to figure out exactly what the right penalties are. I don't know that past precedent makes particularly good sense in this case, because it's really an unprecedented problem."

I guess they can't say too much yet, but that doesn't sound to me like someone who is thinking of punishing PSU lightly.

The NCAA should give the death penalty to Penn State, for its own sake. The NCAA needs the boost in legitimacy that this move will give them.

After the death penalty, the Paterno-is-god cult will spring into a full-fledged fanatic religion, with Paterno as the innocent martyr. Just watch--there will be 30-for-30 specials about this for the rest of our lives, about how Penn State was wronged, etc. The death penalty will not kill the fanaticism--it will just make it stronger.

The death penalty isn't a big enough penalty. With the rising importance of super conferences, the biggest penalty would be for the B1G to kick Penn State out. No BTN money, no bowl ties, no prestige. What other conference would want to take them? What network would want to pay for rights to their games?

The real death penalty won't come from the NCAA, but from the Big Ten.

Since one of their "elite" programs got in trouble they are trying to find the appropriate school to make an example out of. My guess is Indiana football gets slapped with super tough penalties. That should teach PSU that what they did is wrong.

A lot of people have much more faith in the NCAA than I do. I predict that whatever happens to PSU, it will be underwhelming.

The NCAA should give in to its anger. Then their journey to the dark side will be complete.

Good. Goooood. Let the hate flow through your veins.

At any rate, I actually believe the NCAA is going to do something. I know, I know, I should be more cynical (based upon their history).

Football program is going to be closed up for a minimum of two years. The question for me is whether the penalties will only apply to football or the athletic department as a whole? Also, this season's wheels are already in motion. Is it too late to implement penalties immediately or does the NCAA says consequences to everyone be damned, you guys are done right now?

The people continually shouting that this is not a FB issue can also be quiet. Emmert has said it is a FB issue and more than that.

Look, I've been beating this drum and I'll continue to beat it: Penn State MUST suspend football this season on its own accord, and soon, or the NCAA MUST do it for them.

Period.

Perhaps, shockingly, they understand that their very legitimacy is at stake.

Delany would do well to acquire the same hint.

I agree, but with each passing day as the actual season gets closer and closer I don't see that happening. Aside from a postseason ban this year I don't think they will do anything with the season being so close.

Sure there is a hell of a lot more important things than football but I would guess the NCAA would at least like to allow seniors and other players that want to continue their careers enough time to transfer to other schools.

Thunder - that would punish every school in the conference.

Here is what I would do...

As the Big 10 I would tell Penn State that their portion of football related revenues will be donated in the name of the other member institutions to a victims advocates charity. Read - they receive $0.00 in rev sharing off of football.

And that this will continue until the NCAA doles out their penalty.

Conferences are about money. PSU brings money. You're trying to tell me the Big 12 or Big East wouldn't be all over them?

Somehow I think the rest of the coaches in the B1G would be OK with not having to play Penn State this season.

Somehow I don't think that the 4 campuses that Penn State visits this year would be ok with having one less football game this year,

And we're back to the message that football and money are more important than the welfare of children.

Frankly, I don't give a sh!t if they're "OK" with it.

The B1G has an excess of teams. They can work something out vis a vis the schedule.

This is a small part of it.

As I said in my previous post I think it's way too close to the season for them to just cancel the whole thing. There are too many pieces involved for them to get that done in less than a month and a half from the first game.

If anything is done this year I think it's a post season ban and if they are going to drop the hammer it will be starting next season.
