NCAA is full of crap... contradictory tournament expansion

So the argument against a football playoff is that it will take kids out of the classroom (during winter break of all times)... fine if you want that argument I can accept that... however when it comes to the NCAA tournament expanding to 96 teams, it is perfectly fine for them to have games Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun/Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun in the first two weeks. Hello, with travel time and practice you are pulling these kids completely out of classes for two weeks. Some of these schools do not have a spring break, and some of them celebrate spring break in April. (the article is on ESPN that talks about the format and giving 32 teams byes)

Sorry but this just ticks me off that the NCAA will make an argument of why NOT to do one thing... and then they don't even take that into consideration when they want to do something for a different sport.

Call it crap... but the NCAA is getting a little greedy here!
 
The bottom line is 96 teams is one of the worst idea that the NCAA has ever contemplated. Absolute rubbish.
 
I would imagine the argument they will make is that their model for the expanded tournament calls for all games to be completed in the same number of days.
 
I wish we could make our voices heard. I cannot stand this idea. As a March Madness addict and one who parties with friends and has kegs of beer for the 4 days staright of the opening 2 rounds I cannot stand this idea to clutter it even more and water it down. It is absolutely PERFECT as is, the fact they are goign to do this really makes me MAD.....

And eliminate the few days during the tournament that these kids are actually in class.. sorry guys... but I read this article and I was pretty much livid in case you couldn't tell from the OP.

The NCAA is consistent about 1 thing - $$$$$. 96 teams over 64 teams - $$$$$. Bowls over playoff - $$$$$. The NCAA would be better off just admitting to this, at least they'd have a scrap of credibility left. It's comical when some talking head from the NCAA starts to rationalize why they're doing this, or not having a football playoff.
 
while I am not on board with Ncaa tourny expansion, I really do not think that the ''missing classes'' argument is used all that much to argue against a football playoff.
I think it is the additional games taking a toll on young players,and blowing up the bowl system that are their main talking points. ..and diluting the regular season.

This certainly is driven by a chance to re-work the tv deal and get more revenue. Note the thread on ''only 7 athletic depts are self-sufficient over the last five years''.

Personally, I think they should just go back to a 16 team tourny...make the regular season paramount again...win your BCS conference or go home...6 automatic bids and the next 10 best....can you imagine how big those games for conference supremacy would be in Feb?
 
Actually, basketball players probably would miss less class time under the 96-team format. The NIT is going the way of the dinosaur. Basically, the NCAA is merging the NCAA tournament with the NIT.

Currently, there are 95 post-season games (64 NCAA games & 31 NIT games). With a 96-team format, there will be exactly 95 games. Therefore, the number of post-season games will not increase. In addition, there will be no mid-week games the second & third weeks of the tournament. Dayton & North Carolina players probably missed a full week of classes this week. Instead of having eight teams still playing after last Sunday, there would only be four.

Also, it does not make any sense in operating two tournaments. If you were an executive and could make more money by merging a very profitable business with one that loses money; what would you do? Especially, if it had little or no effect on your employees!

I went to ncaa.org this morning and sent an email to the PR staff voicing my opposition....... I know it won't make a difference but it made me feel better.
 
The players dont want a tournament in football

Too many injuries and travel for fans would kill attendence
 
all college football needs is a "final 4" or 4 team playoff. Take the top 4 teams for a playoff. Simple as that. You could do the first 2 games January 1st at Neutral sights and then the championship game a week later. done.

Your right... the Boise States, TCU's, Utahs, Auburns of the world who have gone undefeated without a chance to play for a national title.... no way would they want a playoff to give them that opportunity... they are completely satisfied with being 3rd! (behind the team that loses the national championship game of course)

Agreed... also pointing out that the length of March Madness kills attendance so much that they decided to start throwing it into football domes where more people can pay top dollar to watch ants play basketball. :)
