Great, but I just don't see it. I don't see a go to guy next year. Love big red, but I don't see him being that guy. Maybe woody but I'm thinking more his senior year for that. We take a small step back next year.
Calling it now: Uthoff is going to have a monster year.
I do think White passed up way too many 10-15 footers (no need for him to take 3 pntrs) and he needs to take those and make a decent %. He needs to do this because if he does play the 4 (fulltime) he likely is going to have a heavier/slower guy defending him. He needs to draw his defender away from the basket to open up his drives (which he is very good at driving from the wing.) Too many times last season, however, his defender played off of him when he was on the wing and they were able to better stop his drives. White isn't going to make it in the NBA without at least a 10-15 foot jumpshot.
I dont want White shooting the shots from range he was passing up. I dont want him out there in that space as much as he is. Put him in the paint. Uthoff, I want him shooting any open look he has.
The only way he gains that much weight by November would be by eating pizza, burgers and ice cream all day, and that's not the kind of weight you'd like to gain. 5-8 lbs. of muscle would go a long way though.
THIS. My god this. White should never leave the paint in the halfcourt offensive set. Him running around the 3 point line being a non factor is a killer
White is much more of a finesse player than a #4 PF. He does need to gain muscle weight to compete at that position. When he got into the paint last season, he really wasn't that effective, except on garbage pickups and break aways. I'm really not sure how effective he will be going up against power forwards who have more weight and strength. When is the last time White made any kind of strong post move in or near the paint, with a fade away jumper from 10 feet or a jump hook from 6 feet -- with confidence?
Yeah, having a guy hanging out in the paint all the time is going to be great for spacing the offense. White is going to be a very limited half court player whether he plays the 3 or 4. Guys who have no jumpshot are going to struggle to score. White also hasn't shown the ability to get the ball on the block and score and also tends to disappear a lot when playing bigger and more physical guys. If we're leaning on him to score in the halfcourt game, we're going to be in trouble next year.
Who in the Big 10 is going to take advantage of him offensively? It's not like there are tons of big, physical offensive players in the league at the PF that can score over either shoulder. I'd rather see White at the 4, hanging at the baseline/free throw line catching and driving or getting lob dunks from Dickerson. I think that's how you best utilize him and keep driving lanes open for your guards.
Mike G had plenty of quickness to get into the lane last year but turned it over or missed the layup. He will get continue to get bigger to get the strength to finish at the hoop. Mike G will be a solid guard the B1G before his career ends. He has already shown flashes of a good A/T ratio and has a good stroke most of the time. Hopefully he gets the FT's in order. It might have been a mental thing last year.
Totally agree. The times he would be doing that is just making them play 4 on 5. Whoever is guarding him can sag in to the paint and not worry about closing out on him. White is great in the open court and on broken plays. But he's not a complete player that is even all that great at posting up unless he has a mismatch. I'm glad he's a Hawk he's fun to watch. He just is who he is and lets not get expectations all out of whack as to what he's capable of being.THIS. My god this. White should never leave the paint in the halfcourt offensive set. This. White was all conference for a reason. My guess is White will be around 14 ppg and 7 rpg. Those numbers will have him on one of the all conference teams again this year IMO.
White is a great transition player...but his issue is...he really doesn't have a "home" in a half court set...do you throw him inside where he isn't really that well suited to band around with the big boys?...or do you move him around the perimeter where he is a non factor? If they can get some motion/cutting to the basket going with back doors...that's where White can shine.
But, from the bball games I have seen in the last few years...Fran is pretty good at set plays...but...our half court offense...it leaves a lot to be desired.

They need White to camp out on the baseline during the set plays or go with back door alley oop play. It works the first time or two but then they quit running the set.
Iowa is going to be a lot better than what people think.
