NBA wakeup call

Saying that David Stern is the worst commissoner is wrong, he has been prepared for this strike for the past 2 yrs and has anticipated every move by the players, he knows his league has flaws and wants to fix them so small market teams have a chance similar to the NFL, he knew the players qwould reject the latest offer and is willing to waste the entiere season similar to Hockey a while back, eventually he will get teh deal,

The problem is the players have no leverage. I'm stealing this from Stephen A but I'm sure he won't mind:

If you're a worker who wants to make 150 thousand a year but the only employer available to you offers only 100 thousand, are you going to turn that down to make 50 thousand doing something else?

Is it fair that the owners are giving the players any concessions. NO. Life isn't fair. It isn't fair that employers all across the country are cutting jobs and salaries either.

If you are a worker who wants to make 150 thousand a year, but you know the only employer available can actually give you 130 thousand, but only offers you 100 thousand wouldn't you at least try to negotiate for the 130 thousand before you settle for the 100 grand?

God forbid a CEO has to give up his private plane, trips to vegas and escorts to save a job or two, meet payroll.;)

They have tried. They've tried for months. By going down to 50% of BRI, the players have already given up a billion dollars of the life of the contract. That's a hell of a lot of money and should be more than enough. There's that word again. Should. You know what's more money? The 2.2 billion dollars they're giving up if they miss this season.

If this season is canceled the players are absolutely screwed. Few of them can afford to miss one season of paychecks. Fewer can afford to miss two. That 50% offer will be a pipe dream for the players.

What the players should have done was make a public counteroffer. The owners offer is available online if you want to review it. The players offer? Nowhere to be found.

The players so hold some leverage here...do you think they are the only ones losing $$ right now? Hell no and not even close the owners are loosing it out the rear to...
Actually, I think some of the owners will lose less money by not playing, in comparison to the expired bargaining agreement.

Anything I see that is linked to Grantland, I just skip it. Otherwise its takes three months to read it

Your point?

I thought it was a great synopsis of the NBA lockout. The length of it does not matter, it is about the content. To each his own I guess.

I tried to give this a read...read the first 1000 words...then started skimming...then realized I was not a quarter into it.

It was 5738 words, not counting the sidebar references.

He is obviously a talented guy, as is Joe Posnanski. But after 1000 words, you have to get to the point.
