My thoughts from Iowa's BTN Special Practice

Castillo is physically outmatched against most division one WR's. He is technically sound, but that can't make up for the fact that he is tiny and slow.

I remember Hyde's first season. It wasnt pretty. He got burnt more often than toast does. Glad to see him doing much better, infact some think he is Iowa's number prospect for the NFL. He has come along way.

Lack of depth at all defensive positions seems to me to be the potential wek spot of this team. Not any specific position like DL. If someone gets hurt at CB, our depth isn't very good right now. Same for LB. Maybe someone can step up this year (T Campbell for example) or Collins?Alston at LB. Iowa will absolutely need guys like this to play and, at times , start this year.

I'd be pretty happy with the depth in the back seven, particularly in the secondary. Castillo, Campbell, Buford, Lile can all play.

Depth isn't the issue other than the front four...LB, CB, and Safety all have guys that can step in if someone goes down (Hyde can also play two positions, not at once though)..the issue is whether we have four guys with their hand down that can compete consistently play to play. If that happens...and I think it will...we will be good on defense...21 points a game or so. I disagree that we give up more than last year. The DL struggled last year too, primarily due to injuries to Daniels and Alvis. This year, the back seven is much better IMO, and I think we play more aggressively.

The most important factor though as to why we don't give up more points is that our schedule is the best thing that ever happened to Iowa Football. Last year's was much more difficult...at Penn State, at Nebraska, at Iowa State ( i know, but its a factor).

i dont think we need 4 guys that can play on the dl (no one imo is going to be good enough to play every down). i think we need at least 3 des and 3dts that can rotate...4 each would be better.

i agree the lbs and dbs depth doesnt worry me as those guys have played special teams and that is how iowa builds depth.

One point I haven't heard about the longer routes by the TE's; If the TE's are running longer routes is there going to be a pass protection problem, considering that Iowa has one of the smaller O'lines in the B10 and rookie RB's.

He is a serviceable nickel back. Iowa fans are overly critical of defensive back play.

Yes....I’ve been reading a book lately and it talks about breaking down perception and looking at things as honestly as possible. Most people tend to look at what’s around them thru a prism of what they already believe or rather what’s inside them. You cannot separate your perception from your identity. Hence the thoughts about KF playing seniors vs inexperienced guys…on the one hand yes he has leaned more towards experience when in doubt, which you would expect a leader to do, right? Yet there are so many examples of freshmen and RS Frosh playing early and often (even starting) that too me it’s a non-issue, yet the perception remains.

You're right, he's terrible, and has no business being on Iowa's roster.

Don’t sweat it brother...there is a long list of Iowa fans who have pooh-poohed past Iowa players who eventually made it into the NFL so honestly what they say is immaterial really. From my perspective Castillo is better than the average internet jockey thinks, but he isn’t the caliber of the best of the best past Iowa CB’s and we would be best served if he is a nickel or situational sub. I have indeed seen him play tight coverage, including the slant (which many have suggested he is too “slow” to do) which is instinct, identification and short area quickness way more than speed. But I have also seen him tackle poorly and get “lost” in coverage. Losing the ball in particular….which sometimes Prater did (many a DB has for that matter) as well which is what keeps him still below say a JJ, Spievey, Godfrey, Fletcher (but only as a Sr), Hyde, etc….even though Prater really was a terrific athlete which case in point; I had an Iowa fan on Hawkeyereport, tell me he was 5’9” 167 and would run a 4.67ish forty 2 years ago…so really there is no accounting for what someone really sees as fact, right?

some hok fans must think it is a right of passage to hokfandome to rip players on their own team.

How is that ripping on him? What about that statement is incorrect? Castillo does a great job technically (great hips, quick feet, etc.) but he has limitations. He gets eaten up by big receivers, and burned by really fast ones. He's not a terrible back but he shouldn't be starting (hopefully Lowery's injury is not serious) on any Big Ten team.

And most reasonable people take the same stance. It's the ones who think he has no place on the field at all who we've been calling out.
