MBB: Hawkeyes Leave Cedar Falls with Foul Taste in Their Mouth
MBB: Hawkeyes Leave Cedar Falls with Foul Taste in Their Mouth | Hawkeye Nation

You wouldn’t know it by looking at the box score, but the game played tonight was tightly contested through 30 minutes of action. Iowa lead much of the first half, cruising out to a 10-0 lead that silenced the sold out McLeod Center. It wasn’t until just over 4 minutes to go in the first period that UNI took their first lead after a Chip Rank 3 point shot found the bottom of the net. The Panthers took a 5 point lead into halftime and extended to 7 points out of the gate. Iowa then answered with a 6-0 run and the momentum had yet again changed. Iowa looked good and UNI was reeling, their fans were reeling (fans I might add that were phenomenal all night, especially the UNI student section – props to them). The teams traded baskets and it was a 1 point ballgame with just over 10 minutes to go in the game.
Questionable call after questionable call was made on the court. Fran McCaffery had seen enough and exploded. A cup was tossed in the air after Zach McCabe was called for a blocking foul. Iowa was assessed two technical fouls – one on McCaffery, one on the bench. Anthony James made all four FTs. The next possession, McCabe was called for another foul, wherein he slapped the ball in frustration, causing another technical foul to be delivered to Iowa. Moran made the two technical FTs and Tuttle made the two personal foul FTs. Just like that, a 2 point contest was now a 10 point contest in a matter of 20 game time seconds. The calls kept coming, and with less than five minutes to go, Fran was shown the door after getting his 2nd technical foul. The lead grew to 20 points shortly after that and there was no return.
