My take on these answeres from the KF presser.

Q. Are you aware of the temperature outside of the program and how do you react to that?

COACH FERENTZ: Single digits in Iowa. Do you want to be more specific than that? I’m serious.

Q. People calling for you to be fired, emptying the roster, hating everybody, that kind of temperature.

COACH FERENTZ: We had a coach to the west of us that won a lot of football games that got fired. If you’re in this profession, that’s part of the deal.

If I’m going to sit around listening to the temperature, reading the temperature on the outside, more what I need to do is take the energy that I can put towards the job and put it on our improvement. That’s typically what we’ve tried to do for 16 years.

Did that answer the question?

Smug, arrogant, stubborn, sarcastic! Pellini was fired having a much better record overall than Ferentz. At least over the last 4-5 years. Now granted, Pellini's comments about the the Nebraska brass and the fans starting last year did not help his cause. At least the Nebraska team gave an inspired effort in their bowl game. Would Iowa have done the same if KF would have been let go after the Nebraska game? For the life of me I can not understand Ferentz' tone toward the media when he has basically received a pass over the last 16 years.

I take it as him knowing quite well what the temperature is and being upset anyone would dare question him.

It's because KF is (K)curt in his answers, is smug in his answers, that no one covering Iowa football asks him the tough questions.

You still think KF is a good guy?

He has that tone precisely because he's been given a pass for 16 years; he doesn't feel he should be challenged and doesn't respond well on the rare occasions that he is. I'd like to believe that yesterday was the final nail in his coffin but I don't think it is. I fully expect him to be back next year and give us another mind numbing 6-6 season, if he can even manage that. Iowa is under .500 in conference play over the past 5 seasons, he is not getting the job done.

I've said it before but I don't really understand why people buy into the myth of Kirk Ferentz, a myth that has been built upon a really nice 3 year run from 2002-2004. He's had one really good year since that run (2009). He's had a number of teams that massively underachieved (2008, 2010, 2014). He routinely loses to ISU, one of the worst D1 programs in the country. We haven't been ranked in 4 years. Take off the black and gold glasses folks, it hasn't been all that great when you look at the entire body of work. He SHOULD be fired; unfortunately he won't be and will be back next year to continue leading Iowa football to the depths of irrelevance. Read the Schwartz article Jon posted, it's spot on.

It was a dumb question. What does that even mean? Whats the temperature? What, is Kirk supposed to be the weather man?

It kind of reminds of that town hall where George H.W. Bush was asked a dumb question about the deficit that did not make any sense, and Bush gave a bad answer instead of giving a touchy-feely answer like Clinton gave. But I give Bush credit for not telling her she was a complete idiot. Even the moderator was having trouble translating the question into something that made sense. And I actually voted for Clinton but I always feel Bush got a bum rap for the way he answered that question.

I feel the same way about Ferentz. Not really impressed with his coaching right now, but the question was still a dumb question and deserved a dumb answer.

That's exactly how it read to me. This was basically the Ferentz equivalent of Pelini's "If they want to fire me, go ahead."

See, the difference between this and Bush/Clinton, is that the reporter was asked to clarify and he/she made the question pretty ******* clear: fans are getting restless, want you fired, everybody fired, etc. And he was still an *** about it. He wasn't confused, he wasn't just reacting to a dumb way of phrasing a pretty simple question. And let's not pretend for one second that he didn't know exactly what the reporter meant. He may be losing it on the field, but he's not an idiot.

Exactly!!

Guf, the question was worded in a way that wouldn't embarrass kfootball after a complete dismantling. kfootball got defensive (which is only human) and gave an answer. The "Do you want to get more specific than that? I'm serious" and "Does that answer the question?" comments were nothing but attempts at intimidation.

Over-react much?

You should stop paying attention to press conferences and interviews.

CJ does a simple interview where he says he will see how the game goes and then make a decision about his future and that the message boards turn it into an ultimatum about playing time.

Ferentz can't win in these press conferences. Many of the questions are a trap as Bo Pelini found out. When you are losing, there is no way to answer these questions. Either he is considered smug, or out of touch. Ferentz needs to do better as a coach, but nit-picking how he answers questions during a press conference is a waste of time. And now I feel stupid for replying to this thread, but ever since the Maryland game, it justs feels like the criticism is way out of line on this board.

The question was asked as non-confrontational as it possibly could. Other places that know they won't have credentials yanked would have asked, "So what are your thoughts about so many calling for you to be fired because of 7-8 years of mediocre results on the field?"

Ferentz's smug responses are the responses that someone who has had too much power for too long would respond. There's no threat of oversight.

The dumbest questions were asked by Ferentz.

1. He knew exactly what was being asked and why it was being asked.

2. Why would he ask the question at the end of his response and this be the only time he asked that question?

This exchange is defensive in nature which means he does know what's going on and he does feel the heat.

One thing Kirk was known for and rightly praised for was his his humility.

Yesterday, of all days, he dishes sarcasm? Are you kidding me???

It may seem small, but it's the final nail in the coffin for me. Character was the last thing left for Kirk to hang his hat on, and now that's gone too. Goodbye, sir.

The person who asked the question is in the category of 'news creator' not a journalist that reports.
The columnist and coach relationship has never been a cozy one, anywhere. They are magnified message board posters. No exception to this rule with the 'journalist' in question.

Kirk seems to think he can simply remain in the bubble that is Fort Kinnick. That he doesn't owe the media or fans any answers regarding the state of the program. You can't operate like that in today's world. You need to be held accountable for your performance. Kirk has always gotten a free pass with the Iowa media. His short, snippy answers don't cut it anymore. Not when your program is in a major decline. Enough of this debacle. There are simply no more excuses. None. The time for a change is NOW. Not next year. And not the year after. Gary, reach an agreement with Kirk that lets him ride off into the sunset. The financial fallout will only get worse the longer we keep this staff in place. You can no longer sell this program. Cut your losses and move forward.

There are so many better ways to answer the question. He's not dumb he knows what was being asked.

I would have said something like "Yes I'm well aware, we're all really frustrated. The coaches, players, fans, and especially me. We continue to work our butts off. The Hawkeye faithful and fans deserve better, that's what I intend to give them"

Then again I'm not in his position where they were just totally embarrassed. It's in the heat of the moment. He's got to be madder than hell, but he has to figure out a better way to answer this stuff and remember who he's working for and gives him a paycheck.

He knows who he works for- NOBODY! Barta handed him the keys to the kingdom with that ridiculous contract and KF hasn't had to be accountable to anybody ever since. It's good to be KingFerentz.

I give him credit for being technically correct. Sub-freezing forecast. As in hell is starting to freeze over. As in his supporters are dwindling down to a duffus and a blind dog.

Uh, no. Marc Morehouse asked the question. He's a well-respected journalist who is very credible and has always done a great job being both critical and respectful.
